You, yes YOU should stop saying SLURS! :)
I would propose listing characters that have both reproductive organs as dualsex, salmacian or bigenital
Hermaphrodite is a slur for intersex people. It has been a slur since the 1200s. The mythology it comes from was based on the bodies of intersex human beings, and it has always been used to refer to us. Frankly, I believe it should not be used in a scientific context, there are alternatives without such a history. Hermaphroditism used to be a diagnosis a person could see on their medical records. It was a diagnosis that used to get people culled at birth, and today, while the H slur is no longer used for us, it's replacement label "Disordered Sexual Development" causes us to be sterilized and 'corrected'.
I also want to urge against misuse of the term intersex. Intersex does NOT mean a person has both reproductive organs. This is a stereotype that harms us. I want to share an experience from an intersex user on social media;
"I vividly remember my mother saying at one point "If I had a child like that, I'd kill the doctors for doing that to them" in response to some story on the news about IGM. I don't remember what exactly it was about, I was around 6 or 7, give or take.
My mother is the same woman who let doctors mutilate me. I asked her about this when I was a teenager. She knew the condition I had, she knew the doctors performed a "corrective" surgery on me, she knew the doctors scrubbed it from my medical history. She thought it was because I was "cured", so it didn't matter.
She let that happen to me because she didn't know I was intersex. She thinks that being intersex is being bigen!tal, even today, after I have explained to her that I am intersex and that isn't what it means. She just thinks I have some rare disease.
My point is, misinformation kills us. It has real, physical, tangible effects. You can swear up-and-down that you wouldn't be complicit in our abuse, but if you cannot identify the language used to describe us in real life (Or actively water down that language into taboo porn categories, COUGH COUGH) then you won't even recognise it happens, and it happens when we are too young to advocate for ourselves."
This misconception also acts to cause people to believe we are not a real marginalized group of people who exist. I have had so many furries believe intersex is just a tag for fantasy genitals (that aren't even intersex), and insisted I was lying about being intersex, or they assume it's part of a nonbinary transition rather than a way real people can be born.
Another excerpt from an intersex blog;
"The widespread misrepresentation & mistagging of intersex in smut and fanfic and stuff is like, ACTIVELY harmful. It is MATERIALLY harming us. Y'all have no fucking clue how many people think intersex means both genitalia, directly because of mislabeled fiction. It's a stereotype that causes us to be assauIted and objectified.
Its a stereotype that is so prevalent that it has claimed the word intersex, to the point that word doesn't even refer to real intersexuality whenever it's used by perisex people to talk about fiction.
It like. Idk kind of pisses me off that that the only word that neutrally refers to my body has been co-opted by perisex people to use for porn that does not represent me. And then perisex people get mad at me for not living up to their ""intersex"" fetish.
Not to mention that this stereotype stops intersex people from realizing they are intersex, because they think the word means having a pen!s and a vag!na, and they don't have that. That's part of why I never questioned whether or not I was intersex for 18 years despite my incredibly intersex upbringing. I didn't know what it meant because of this misinformation. I was DEPRIVED OF MY COMMUNITY because of this.
If you mistag shit this way, you're actively contributing to this."
I know so many intersex ex-furries who just couldn't tolerate the intersexist bigotry in the fandom, it's partially why I deleted my old FA account. I'm coming back in hopes that things have the capacity to change. I hope that we will be listened to. I want this community to be safe for people like me. I know intersex people with legitimate and horrendous trauma regarding the H term being used both as a derogatory descriptor and as a diagnosis. I was not subjected to IGM or other medical abuse, my body is intact. (Because of severe medical neglect but that's besides the point). I still CARE about intersex people who have experienced medical abuse. I personally don't flinch when I see the H slur, but I know people who do. I know older intersex people who had that word applied to them in their medical history as children, I know intersex people who have been forced to be photographed nude as children by doctors because they were called that word- they were treated like animals in a zoo, a curiosity, a problem, the point of these medical journals is discussion of how best to "treat" and "cure" the intersex person's existence.
The widespread use of this term actively drives intersex people away from the furry community.

Additionally, the H word was ORIGINALLY a derogatory for intersex people, by like, literally hundreds of years. THIS IS NOT A NEUTRAL BIOLOGY TERM! IT SHOULDN'T BE USED IN BIOLOGY EITHER! It was always in reference to us, but was adopted into zoology because biologists compared cosexed/dichogamous animal species to intersex people in their work, using the H word. Which was the only term for intersex people at that point in history. IT'S USE IN BIOLOGY IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR YOU TO USE IT TOO!
I wish this was something that was more known about. Please, be an ally to us. Do not say the H slur, and do not tag characters as intersex for having both parts. It's kind of insufferable this website includes the intersex flag in its banner but does absolutely nothing to be a safe space for intersex people.

It's honestly baffling just how wrong most people ever are about us. I blame the fact we've been conflated with snails for a few centuries because some scientists didn't bother to come up with a word for when animals have both gametes and instead just called them H words.
My doctor told me he is unsure of whether or not I am intersex, and ever since then I have read a lot about intersex types.
I am also transmasculine and identify as altersex because I purposely had a surgery to give me genitalia that could not occur naturally.
But yeah, there has been a lot of "intersex means ur a hermaphrodite, ya got both an innie and and outie hurr hurr" in this community. It seems to be related to transphobia and ignorance about basic human biology too.
Thank you for posting this.

Well. intersex does mean you're a hermaphrodite. Because that's a slur for intersex people that's always referred to intersex people since the word was first coined centuries ago. Saying the H slur doesn't refer to intersex people is like saying the F slur doesn't refer to gay people. It was an established term for intersex people that was applied to cosexed/dichogamous animals in roughly the 1600s, because there was no terminology for animals with dual reproductive function. So the scientists said fuck it, and called them H words instead of coining a new term. There is also the aspect of eugenics causing the scientific community to conclude that intersex people were "less evolved" and that is why intersex humans and some animal species were grouped together under the term hermaphrodite, rather than just making a different word for cosexed/dichogamous animals.
I get really passionate about this lol.

No, it's good to hear what you have to say! I'm only a "suspected" intersex person. My doctor said my clit size, vaginal dysfunction, and urethra placement seemed to indicate I am intersex. I have since altered my body to better align with my gender identity but I am very much interested in learning about intersex people.
I guess what I meant by the "you're the H word" thing was that people just assume it means "you have both." I'm sorry if it was wrong or offensive, just saying it certainly does get tiring seeing the ignorance all the time.

Oh yes I do know what you mean. People assume that I have bigenitalia/both parts all the time. I do have ambiguous genitalia but that's not just having 2 reproductive systems and I don't think I've ever seen a perisex person actually draw/describe intersex junk accurately. People ask me if I can get myself pregnant/fuck myself semi-often. I actually deleted my old FA account I had as a kid because people on here suck
Why tf would people ask you that
1. it's rude
2. it's a stupid question to begin with
3. i forgot where i was going with this
4. i get asked about my "surgeries" whenever i tell someone i'm trans
i'm so sorry you went through that. i hate when people reduce me to my body. when people ask me intimate questions about my body now i just say "you go first" and they get all offended lmao

huh - thank you for this, i had no clue about the term “monoecious”. i had been using the term “monosex” for a fictional species because it’s not intersex and i didn’t want to use anything either derogatory or simply inaccurate, and their biology is that that they only have one sex/growth hormone at puberty. apparently comes form the greek term meaning “one house.” cool!
Asking out of a place of curiosity and wanting to be properly educated, what does it mean to be intersex?
I was aware of H being a slur, though I will admit until just now upon seeing this post I was among those that assumed/thought that 'intersex' was a synonym for other better terms like dualsex/bigenital

it's pretty much an umbrella term for having naturally atypical sex traits. while it isn't possible to have two reproductive systems, one male one female, it is possible to have a single reproductive system that is between male & female, or has characteristics of both.
Using myself as an example, I have ambiguous genitalia that passes for a small penis from the front/top-down viwe, but I have a small vaginal opening combined with significant hypospadias between the halves of my scrotum which is bifid. Internally I have a uterus, and undescended testes, possibly ovotestes. I get periods occasionally but I don't bleed. I also have breasts, a more feminine build, and a deep voice. I don't grow facial hair.
Not every intersex person is going to look like this, there's pretty much infinite combinations of sex traits that would designate a person as intersex. some intersex people are only intersex via genetics, example, a cis woman with XY chromosomes. it's an incredibly broad category of people. but everyone just knows of us as the 1 thing it's actually impossible to be born with.

Thank you for spreading the word, I saw and hear a lot stuff that is just absolutly wrong, including the H word, wich most of the time, people outside think it's the genuine word in my native tongue.
I do what I can and spread the truth about it, stay strong and take care.
