The two most powerful men in Nab'al, a fictional 8th century Maya kingdom. At left is Siyaj Unen Nah Kan, the b'aah sajal (roughly "head advisor") to the ruler, and at right is Pasaw Witz Chaahk, the k'uhul ajaw ("holy lord"), or ruler, of the kingdom.
To the best of my ability, everything about this image has some basis in actual Classic Maya art. For example, while the design of the water serpent on Pasaw Witz Chaahk's skirt isn't a design that I've seen on a ruler's skirt, the design itself is based on an image of the serpent on a ceramic vessel. The colors of the background, and the styles of the glyphs, are based on the Bonampak murals (you'll be seeing that name a lot if you look into the notes of my history-themed art– sadly, little quite like them is extant.) The major sources for their clothing were the "Jaguar-Pelt Throne Vase" and Vase K6418.
The glyphs are the characters' names and titles:
SIY-ya-ja u-ne-n(e) NAH-KAN u-BAAH sa-ja-la K'UH(ul)-AJAW-NAHB(al) - Sihyaj Unen Nah Kan, u-Baah Sajal K'uhul Nabal Ajaw
"The Baby Water Serpent is Born, the Head Advisor of the Holy Nabal Lord"
PAS-wa WITZ CHAAHK-ki K'UH(ul)-AJAW-NAHB(al) - Pasaw Witz Chaahk, K'uhul Nabal Ajaw
"Chaac Opens the Mountain, Holy Nabal Lord"
On a mostly unrelated note, I'm glad that the "ajaw" tag isn't just Genshin Impact anymore.
