...this, and other canals like it, is where every drop of water goes that isn't absorbed into the ground. This is the palmetto canal at South Carrollton Ave. You can see the water rushing from just beneath the bridge. Our system of pumps and canals is the only way we have of removing water from our city. Living here, especially in late July and august (or any time it rains heavily for an extended period of time) is an adventure as being able to get from one place to another in a timely fashion not only necessitates knowledge of special routes to avoid traffic, but additional routes that do not flood or at least remain passable with a center depth (the roads slope to the sides, so the shallows are in the center) of less than 8" for passenger cars
