Friday, sitting on the edge of her desk, stares at a vague point in the room, her thoughts mired in an investigation that refuses to make sense. Too many gray areas, too many suspicious silences. Her right hand absently holds a cigarette, not yet smoked or almost forgotten, more a thought-provoking accessory than an acknowledged vice.
Through the half-open blinds, the pink and purple neon lights of Hogcity bathe her office in artificial light, a strange mixture of toxic sweetness and urban weariness. The furniture is old, the files are stacked crookedly, and the atmosphere has the heaviness characteristic of nights that are too long and truths that are poorly buried.
It is here, in this setting from another time, that Friday operates. A private detective in a world that no longer confesses, she observes, she doubts, she waits. No smoke, no drama. Just that suspended calm before the pieces of the puzzle align... or explode.
