An updated design and reference for my phoenix sona, Syver.
After I made Aerin, I started feeling like I could've done more with Syver. I'd kept Syver kinda simple for fear of overcomplicating his design, but when I just went all in on Aerin's scale patterns and loved the results, I realised that I hadn't been bold enough with my firebird. I was also more thorough in making sure there weren't any issues with Aerin that would bother me later, which just made me more aware of how much I'd gone "eh, good enough" with Syver, haha!
Anyway, this new version of Syver feels like it nails everything I'd wanted from his design. It involved a lot of just going for it with stuff I'd considered in the past and emphasising features I was too timid with before, so having that pay off with something I'm really happy with is super satisfying.
Notes:
- The flames he produces are turquoise in colour and he can control everything about them, from the shapes they make to whether or not they can burn someone.
- His wings have some function as hands, though his grip isn't very strong.
- His height is around 5'8".

While I definitely had a fondness for his previous design, I have to say this new Syver is extremely stylish! I just adore the dark blue-grey on his back and how it contrasts with his vibrant markings. Despite their brightness they look absolutely natural, which I suppose is befitting a bird given how absurdly colourful they can be! I really like how his outer tail feathers are so detailed and grow in layers, too: it reminds of some sort of ornate papercraft. It's really cool to see such visually striking results from his redesign, especially knowing it was a result of staying true to what you wanted to do with him and not limiting your vision. I don't think he risks looking overcomplicated at all like this - he strikes a nice balance of being simple and cohesive, but also striking and memorable. :)
That dark blue/navy is something I'd been tempted to add to him for a long time largely because of how much more vibrant it felt like it made the green and blue, I just didn't commit to trying to work out how to do it. The almost immediate feeling of "oh damn this actually rules" when I did it for this redesign makes me feel like I should've tried it sooner, haha! The tail feathers are one of the things that's closer to what I wanted to start with but held myself back from, though I think I would've struggled much more with the layers back then compared to now. Anyway, thank you! :D
