It's a yearly event starting every July, where participating artists brawl with gifting drawings to their opponents and/or their teammates. In June they announce the theme for the next event, this year it's between Fossils vs. Crystals.
Participating is always optional, I've played in the last 3 and it's pretty fun ^^

As BengalBat said, it's mostly a pretext for artist of all skill level to interact with/meet other artists, in SFW way...that last detail may not sounds like much, but it's a luxury as most gallery have more NSFW content enabled, making it less comfy for many. That and sometimes NSFW artist enjoy the break from the kinky side it results, other still keep the kinky part alive but do it unofficially outside of the website, ect...
Another perk is that with how attack and defend works, being visible for others, it ease to know who is likely to take the effort to draw something back, so the chance of it all being one-sided is more slim
And if you're more competitive, your drawings get scored by how complex they were, but it's rarely one person focus when participating. It's really just a pretext for people that enjoy to draw to draw more :)
