I accept payment after the piece is finished so I can tally up all the minutes, since I charge by the hour. But as I go down the list, sometimes people go "Oh my god I can't afford it right now but I still want one" and then I have a separate list called purgatory corner, and I say hey man I made you wait for me, I can wait for you.
And you can hop back to the top of the queue when you're ready

Yeah! Sometimes when I'm doing a ref sheet for a character who has never been drawn and the customer doesn't really have a clear idea of what they want, I do a discord call (cameras off) and I share my screen and we work through it in real time
maybe shop through pinterest, try ideas and color pallets on
