Just heavy paper (watercolor paper works well, I enjoy the smooth surface that it have compared to canvas, and relatively inexpensive compared to wood panels. you can also get the wood grain to poke through occasionally if you dont put enough gesso down.
I Put 2 coats of gesso, one over the whole thing then I tape it to a wood block for my mini easel and apply a second coat. I still run into the issue of my tape picking up some of the paper but I dont have painters tape so leave it to that

The Gesso just goes on the paper, tape it to the block so I'm not hunched when I paint. Like I said it is cost efficient I prime the paper so it doesn't absorb to much paint before I get it where I want it. I Gesso it 2x, once before so the tape doesn't pick up the paper on removal. Also makes me get art out quicker, less worried about wasting a paper over a canvas or panel. lost of mental goes into something that cost more but a prepped paper I couldn't care less if I mess up on that.
Being less precious about my art allows me to try new things and not worrying about the outcome. I know I could just paint over something on a canvas but it isn't the same as starting fresh. Storage is also much easier.
It started when I just wanted to do some fun small paintings and didn't want to buy a bunch of canvases that small and I had the paper on hand and I tried without the gesso but didn't take well so I made it work. also they are post card size so easy to ship and frame
