In 2003, Murray and his wife went on a holiday trip to Malaysia. They both got infected with SARS, and had to be hospitalized once back home. Murray indeed almost died from a severe form of pneumonia. During that event, Cleo was still a young kid and she lost a lot of her family and friends, including her mother. The picture of the virion (a king) is from her memory, when her mother got infected. Her mother was still able to talk, but used this last strength to tell her child to run away. Cleo couldn't though, as she was completely frozen by fear. She just stood there, watching the virion infecting her mother. When done, the king virion sat next to the mother while he laughed menacingly at Cleo.

SARS-CoV-1 is closely related to SARS-CoV-2. Both are members of the Sarbecovirus subgenus, which in this comic's universe resemble canids. However, SARS-CoV-1 belongs to the SARS-CoV-1 related lineage, of which the species resemble fox-like canids, such as the red fox, Arctic fox, gray fox, bat-eared fox, culpeo, fennec etc. They are generally smaller than members of the SARS-CoV-2 related lineage, which resemble dog-like canids, such as the wolf, domestic dog, coyote, jackal, dingo, African wild dog etc. Being a coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1 uses monarchy as its social structure, so its leader is known as a king. They refer to their family as a skulk and their young are called kits. Their native virus language sounds like fox noises. Like its cousin, SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV-1 can use telepathy and it uses this power for the same reason too. SARS-CoV-1's design for this comic is specifically based on the melanistic (black colored) red fox, but there also virions who come in red, with black and white markings. In rare cases, non-melanistic virions even come in the same colors as the specially bred domestic foxes.


*SARS-CoV-1 was always known as SARS-CoV, which is why Cleo uses the virus's full name without the 1 added. The 1 was added some time after SARS-CoV-2 got its official name.

Virus Attack is a science-based fantasy webcomic about COVID-19 and how the human immune system fights this disease. However, keep in mind that I'm only a virus enthusiast and that I never went to a school to learn all that I know. I mainly learned everything from either books or scientific websites. I also have ASD-related learning difficulties and thus I might've interpret and/or read things wrong. Some of the lore that I use for the creatures in this comic are made up and more based on the animal models that I use for them as well.
