To be fair, even if time did them part, it would still not be a tragedy. Since those two clearly seem to age differently, it has the same flair as living with a companion who lives fewer years than a human. They might not be here forever, but you were there forever, for them.
However, I'd wager that the truth behind that is not that the merfolk are killing humans, but rather that they turned them into aquatic creatures.

I agree. I think it's beautiful to have two characters aging differently (like many we see in Baldur's Gate 3 or many other fantasy settings). I would not see it as a tragedy either, as long as they live happily together and are at peace with their differencies on that topic.
I really like the take you have here about merfolks turning humans to aquatic creatures, while humans think they drown them to kill them. I love that type of "two sides of the same story" thingy.
