"Kezax, nicknamed the Black Hunger, was one of the most terrifying dragons in Old Valyria. His name inspired fear not only in his enemies, but also in the dragonkeepers themselves, whose strength and skill in taming the winged monsters often proved powerless before his fury. Enormous, with scales the color of pitch, rusted in places with reddish tints, he resembled not a living creature, but a spawn of the underworld itself. It was said that a man could stand upright in his gaping maw, and his flames burned entire villages to ashes with a single breath.

Matarys Entaryon, Kezax's rider, was considered one of the few whom the dragon recognized as his master, although even he could not always completely subjugate the will of the black giant. Records show that at the Battle of Burning Cliffs, Kezax went berserk and went on a rampage that reduced not only his enemies but also some of his own army to ashes. However, in the hands of Entaryon, the dragon remained a deadly weapon, whose hunger for blood and fire made him a symbol of terror.

But even the greatest of dragons do not last forever. After nearly twelve decades in the air, Kezax fell not in battle, not under the swords of his enemies, but from betrayal. The records of the maesters say that he was poisoned by the rivals of House Entaryon, a poison hidden in mutton that slowly ate away at him from the inside. The monster died slowly, losing its former strength, its once mighty wings drooping, and the roar that shook the mountains turned into a hoarse moan. When the truth was revealed, Matarys Entaryon's wrath was so great that he swore to destroy every last traitorous line.

After much investigation, the culprits were captured and their heads laid at the foot of a pedestal, above which was placed a massive dragon skull. Suspended by heavy chains, it stood for centuries in the dungeons of House Entaryon, a grim reminder of Kezax's power and his rider's wrath. Only the Doom of Valyria obliterated both the House and their monument, burying the memory of the Black Hunger in ash and stone."
