We've seen stranger things turned into religious icons and icons of Hope. For example, a device designed to give a slow, torturous death, and of such simple construction too, a crossbar attached to a post.
(Although some still see that icon as a symbol of oppression rather than hope, but it seems there is always someone ready and willing to pervert a prophet's message of peace into one of war.)
