Crude Defender Vs Pipe Rifle
Note:
This is a MOD chosen over the vanilla Pipe weapons in the game, because face it, they were complete garbage. Here is the mod:

"Semi-automatic rifle, made out of scraps of junk in record time, poor accuracy and overheats like hell, but still, it is a cheap weapon for defense that uses very common and readily available ammunition in the wastes, can be repaired with pipe rifles, pipe pistols, NCR service rifles, battle rifles." -
Gerik Goldstone.
True to its claim, this rifle can be made from scrap in just over two hours, using the very common .38 pistol round; ammo is not an issue. Repairing the Rifle is not an issue either, since pipe rifles can be used to repair the rifle to add to the Crude defenders' charm. Dealing slightly more damage than the Pipe rifle, while being more accurate, however, the cost would be its fire rate, as well as the weight of the gun, just over double the pipe rifles, while also being longer and harder to use in tight spaces. This did not take away from its charm, though, for it became very popular in the outer urban areas that were once the post-war Suburbs and even to a degree the rural areas. However, the price tag was an issue of 100 caps for the .45 chambered version; however, the .38 was a modest 55 caps. expensive but nothing out of the price range of a couple of weeks' saving, which for the common wastelander out of a settlement may as well be a year for them in the rate people would die or end up as something meal.
But, making its appearance right after the Great War in 2078, when prewar weapons started to break or become harder to find after being scavenged over multiple times, Survivors opted to get a Crude Defender, easy to maintain, reasonably cheap, becoming the staple Type of pipe rifle the common wastelanders would use until 2102 when they would make the rifle version of the Pipe pistol that came out that same year, The Crude Rifle started to fade from use because of the cheaper cost of the Pipe rifle, also post war gun makers could learn the universal design of the Pipe rifle easier than the Crude Defender, meaning more of the Pipe rifle would be produced, then distributed to the wasteland.
making its way to the Capital Wasteland in 2120, making itself known and well-used by inhabitants in the ruins that wanted a "cheap throw-away weapon," as the locals called it to fill in for the weapons they have been relying on from before the war started to break down with spare parts becoming harder and near impossible to obtain. The Defender would be found as far south as Point Lookout and eventually as far as Far Harbor. Demand would eventually fizzle down to maybe 10 or so a year being made, having its heyday from 2078-2130, with an estimated 30,000 made in total to the current date, 2296. Most models are just commissioned from the old Ghoul himself, but few models can be found, be it in a settlement's weapon storage for last ditch weapons they have not cleaned out yet for replacement, or a family heirloom left in the attic as a reminder of when times were at their worst for their family in the past.
If you find one, you have found one of the first designs made after the Great War, which was a saving weapon in the early years when getting a weapon was hardest.
