I was watching QI recently, and they were talking on one episode about how in IRL asteroid fields, the asteroids are both quite small, and incredibly far away from each other to the point of being almost entirely a non-issue to traverse, unlike the giant chunks of huge clustered boulders always portrayed in movies.
