I assume his stats aren't very good? That seems like the best reason to not let him into a party (if he used 3.5 rules I'd figure his unoptimised 2-weapon fighting weapon choices would be an issue :P).

I'd give him a chance. Sure it'll put him in danger, but if he knows the risks, depriving him of a chance to improve would be patronizing, impede him from improving, and he would resent me for it. (Hell, entomology can already be the first step in some very useful skill sets)

Just gotta make sure to never forget he is a beginner and plan accordingly... And ask him how to contact his family in case of... "premature career termination".
