I've had this card in my files for some time now. I had established a lot time ago that I wanted Edmund to embody Jeskai (Blue/Red/White) colors, but designed Jeskai cards is tricky. I didn't want to fall into the trap of making another spellslinger commander, and I wanted to make something that flavorfully felt like a good card for him both as a fighter and as Enigma's apprentice.
Then came Murders at Karlov Manor, and specifically a Boros Commander precon that was built around the goad mechanic, with Nelly Borca as the Commander.
I happen to be one of the few people in the world with a fondness for Murders at Karlov Manor and its mechanically, in particular the Suspect mechanic. I like how it fed into the goad mechanic (one of my all-time favorites in multiplayer magic) in Nelly's design, so I leaned on that design space for my own take on it.
Since this design goads and suspects creatures far for frequently then Nelly's card, it was necessary to make the card draw a little less consistent. This gave me the perfect excuse to invoke one of my favorite mechanics in all of Magic: Investigate.
Combined, this flavorfully represents Edmund muscling in, picking fights with crooks and scumbags until he eventually solves the cases and finds the true culprit. It's appropriate for him, and I love how the whole package comes together.
