This illustration was made shortly after finishing my volunteering work in southeastern Spain, during the (Circus pigargus) rescue campaign. Due to rapid land-use changes, this species is now forced to nest in cereal crops. Unfortunately, their breeding season coincides with the harvest, and many chicks are killed by harvesting machines. Volunteers work to locate and mark the nests in order to prevent these horrible deaths and help protect this fragile and beautiful species.
