"The waves were vicious, the wind without mercy, the fair moon shrouded in dank drapes of cloud; and our little vessel astray in lightless night on the cruelest of waters. Those devils, the Sons Of Ocelot, had put out the beacon on Codswallop Point and denied us our bearings. Close were the fangs of Peanuckle Reef, the stranding sands of Gurning Bank, the rudder-snaring weeds of Dagon's Kitchen Garden... we knew ourselves doomed, and that the dawn would not be ours to see.
"And then... a sudden light to starboard, cold as the moon but bright as beaconflame. I raised spyglass and saw a dread wonder. A spectral figure, hooded and cloaked, the deep dark eyes in her canine visage full of the strangest intensity, and in her phantasmic paw a lantern that shone as if with cold fire. And beneath her its light showed the double peak of Atheist's Miter Rock.
"We knew then our location, and so evaded all perils and reached the arms of Make-It-So Harbor. And every night now I bless the spirit who came, whether from Heaven or the Void, to save us from death and the Deep. Sweet it is to know that Those Beyond still watch over us poor mortals!"
After the unfortunate incident, Alameda's ghost needed a break. It was fortunate for the schooner Hecate's Toes that she decided on the seaside.
