Ness quickly learns of the mortality of the Flying Men, and is warned not to take advantage of them. Together Ness and an anthropomorphic personification of his own courage travel the spiraling path into the depths of Ness's darkest subconscious, but the Flying Man falls before Ness reaches the path to the pit of his soul, the Sea of Eden. A nightmarish landscape of water, towering spires and familiar monstrosities. At the pit of it all Ness come across the manifestation of his own darkness taking the the form of the Mani Mani statue. As is his typical response to such challenges, Ness decides to beat it up.

In an old nintendo power article of EARTHBOUND, the creator kinda explained that the Flying Man was originally to be named the Phoenix, and that Ness's Father's courage was the same as his.
The grave was the grave of the first that Ninten fought alongside in the quest to beat gigyas in MOTHER.

damn nintendo they should re-release the whole trilogy >_< at least for ds or 3DS, since the american public only got to play the second in the saga.... we should all make a request somehow to Nintendo. EarthBound for me was one of my Fav RPG ever and an inspiration for the career I've chosen to follow.
