Three & One pt 9 (Story in description)
Although Maroon had perfected the artform of seeming detached in front of most of the crew, his insides bubbled with anxiety. He did his absolute best to maintain form as he made his way to the admin office. Just before breakfast he’d sent out a request to the other admins on the ship. He had kept the exact subject vague, but had said it was in regards to the recent accident. Pink hadn’t been wrong in saying that half the crew was already in the know. But still, the thought of openly admitting what the three of them were. It frightened him. He hadn’t even told Gray yet, and anticipated spending a few days making it up to him.
Still, the safety of their intended was at stake. To ensure that Black would be properly treated, the admins must know the full situation. Despite knowing this, Maroon hesitated for a moment before joining the others in administration. They had all already gathered. Purple, White, Yellow, and Red all sat in admin, their helmets resting on the table. Their quiet chatter diminished as Maroon entered the room.
“Ah Maroon,” Red announced jovially, “welcome to the party! Care to tell us why you’ve gathered us here today?” Red had always been approachable, but even his jolly nature couldn’t put Maroon at ease. He sat robotically in his chair facing the others. Yellow shifted at Red’s side, settling his piercing gaze on the imposter.
“First, I must confirm if everyone here is aware of the status of the crew.” Maroon said, his stoicism becoming difficult to maintain. The others exchanged startled glances. White and Purple seemed more interested than anything. Captain Red seemed surprised, and Yellow continued to train his gaze on Maroon.
“Are you referring to the crew as a whole, or certain members of the crew?” White asked, her tone almost teasing. Maroon wished he could form eyes for the sole purpose of glaring at her.
“The latter.” He groused. Purple’s eyes flashed subtly, a warning. Marron raised a hand in surrender and turned his attention to the captain. “I am referring to three specific members of the crew.” Maroon forced out. Red simply nodded sagely. Maroon had guessed before that the captain knew, but still. A look of realization flashed over Yellow’s face, his mouth forming a small o.
“I can appreciate the need for secrecy.” Red said with a gentle expression on his face. “However, in the interest of transparency, as well as the fact that you asked us to be here. I am going to request that you speak plainly. Not as captain to first officer, but friend to friend.” He never took his gaze off of Maroon as he spoke. Maroon felt some of his anxieties being lifted away. He glanced around the table at the others. Yellow was practically bouncing in his seat as he flashed Maroon a double thumbs up, clearly struggling to stay quiet. Purple was looking at Red with barely hidden surprise. White simply nodded at him encouragingly.
“There are three non-humanoid lifeforms aboard the Skeld. What humans would call, imposters. They are Pink, Gray, and myself.” Maroon finally said. Red simply nodded sagely, as if his suspicions had finally been confirmed. The others were not surprised, it seemed. “I was aware that White and Purple knew of our status. And I had guessed that Red would work it out.” Maroon said, his gaze falling to Yellow. “However, you do not seem surprised.” Yellow continued to grin.
“Red told me!” He boasted, as if that was some kind of achievement. Maroon simply grunted in response.
“I found that sharing my thoughts helped me piece things together.” Red explained awkwardly. “Anyways, we all had some idea, but were waiting for confirmation from you. We got the sense that you weren’t out to hurt anyone, so I let it lie.” His jovial posture shifted to something a bit more formal. The dedicated captain coming out to play. “However this is somewhat abrupt, why confirm the information now?” Red asked. Maroon shifted uncomfortably, gathering his thoughts.
“You are of course aware of the accident that injured Mr. Weyland recently.” Maroon began, “Me and my fellow imposters were compelled to donate our blood for a transfusion. As we are able to perfectly simulate human biology, it was the obvious choice.” Maroon paused to allow the other admins to digest the information before soldiering on. “In recent weeks, we have begun to notice subtle behavioral shifts in Black, as well as some possible side effects of the transfusion.” Maroon concluded. He felt tension bleed into the room as Red and Yellow both stiffened slightly. Purple and White still seemed unfazed by the information, which wasn’t honestly all that surprising.
“What kind of side effects?” Yellow asked urgently, his large frame leaning over the table with interest. Maroon did a mental tally of the changes before laying them out, one by one. However he was interrupted by White’s clinical tone.
“First of all, his recovery rate has been rather impressive considering the damage done. Despite the lingering damage to his spine, which makes walking and standing for long periods of time exhausting. Do I have that right?” She said. Maroon nodded curtly, thankful for some of the attention to have been diverted from him.
“Yes, that’s right,” He confirmed, “As well as an increased appetite, metabolism, and an intense craving for protein rich foods.” Maroon then looked to Red again, laying his hands on the table in a mock surrender. “However, other factors have also come to light. Our species possesses a sort of psionic link, which allows for genetic memory and limited empathic connections.” Maroon explained. “It seems that Black has been showing signs of emerging psionics, similar to what we possess.” Red looked stunned for a moment, only nudged out of his stupor by Yellow’s elbow.
“Right,” Red began, “That is somewhat concerning.” Red looked at Yellow, searching for something. The usually boisterous man simply shrugged his shoulders, unsure of what to say. “Can you give us some examples?” Red finally asked.
“To begin with, Black is aware that we are the ones who donated blood for the transfusion, despite no one informing him of such.” Maroon began. “We have also all sensed some emotions drifting from him, something we cannot do for humans.” Maroon swallowed nervously, thinking of just twenty minutes before when he’d sensed another presence in he and Gray’s conversation. “And this morning, I believe he could feel my emotions, and those of Gray.” He finished.
The admins all seemed to take a moment to digest the new information. Purple and White were whispering quietly to one another. Yellow was frantically writing something down at Red’s side. The captain had his hands together, mouth hidden by his interlocked fingers as he stared at the table. Purple suddenly spoke up, their calm demeanor breaking slightly as they did.
“We have also noticed that our equipment no longer works on Black.” They said confidently. “Scans come back scrambled, and handheld devices short out when he becomes too nervous.” Maroon nodded slowly, digesting that for himself.
“That makes sense.” He said, “There is a reason the three of us provided documentation making us exempt from scans. Our physiology produces a high amount of electromagnetic energy. It’s how some members of our species are able to remotely lock doors or cause malfunctions to core systems.” Maroon continued, partly to himself. Maroon continued to ruminate on this as Red addressed their medical officer.
“Have you noticed any other changes, White?” He asked. She looked deep in thought for a moment before shaking her head. “Alright, Do either of you know if these changes could be detrimental to Black’s health?” He asked.
“Or anyone else on the ship.” Yellow added. Maroon and White shared a look. Maroon could see the uncertainty on her face, and was frightened to find that he felt much the same. There had never been a case like this to his knowledge. Maroon knew that his silence spoke volumes. Yellow stood from his chair, and tapped a few buttons on the table to bring up Black’s file.
“Well according to his history with MIRA, Nico Weyland is a model employee. I can keep an extra eye on him when I have time to spare. Monitor for any drastic changes.” He paused to glance at Maroon. “I assume that you and the other two have been doing the same thing?” He waited for a response, but all Maroon could bring himself to do was nod. “Ok, I think it would be smart for any changes to be reported to all of the admins from now on.” There was a collective nod around the table, and Maroon couldn’t find any reason to argue. It was sound logic after all.
“Considering that this is uncharted territory, as well as the fact that me and my mates are deeply invested in the safety of everyone on the ship, I think that is more than fair.” Maroon said with finality. His confidence beginning to return. “I would ask that the majority of the crew be kept in the dark about our nature for the time being.” Marron continued. “I’m already going to have to grant Gray a few days of leave so he doesn’t panic himself to death.” He groused. Yellow gave a startled laugh, his obnoxiously loud voice making a return now that the tension had lessened.
“We talking about the same Gray that yelled at Tan for twenty minutes, just for using his wrench without asking?” Yellow guffawed. Maroon unfortunately remembered that incident, and the three hour sulking episode that followed shortly after. Maroon simply nodded, knowing how different the three of them acted around humans.
“Well, I think we can do that. It will be up to you all to decide when you’re ready.” Red replied, patting Yellow on the shoulder to calm him as he spoke. Maroon nodded to him gratefully, and prepared himself to be scolded by his mates.
