It's funny. When I stumbled over the artwork "Kiro and Keri" I had no intention of a dog-themed illustration. I simply adored the style. But then I began to like the idea more and more: A dog hiding their honestly and dishonestly acquired possessions under a giant pile of dirt. Clichéd? Yes, no doubt. But that's precisely why it brings a smile to your face. A simple, yet fitting idea, adorable from start to finish.
I'm still surprised how well the dog costume suits Chick, the Charr: A race of bipedal felines. I was a bit worried that the lack of (most of) her clothing would make her unrecognizable. However, this concern was misplaced. Hair and fur (colors) looks fantastic on Chick in her canine form. Her blue eyes and bandanna also make her easily recognizable. And, of course, the whole scene with her sitting on a pile of loot, which is totally her style. I also love this inconsistency of her wearing a dog tag which embodies belonging and dependence. It contradicts to her attitude, the triumphant look on her face and the ruffled fur. All of that makes her appear lawless, independent, stray. The dog tag itself is a surprisingly good choice to emphasize it, because the symbol on the badge is actually the symbol of the Untamed. So it says exactly the opposite of what you would expect from a dog tag. It is not a sign of subordination or ownership, but of freedom and being unrestrained.
The background is well done. I'm always surprised how artists which aren't familiar with the universe (in this context the game Guild Wars 2) can create a perfect, recognizable setting out of thin air. It's so easy for someone like me, a Guild Wars 2 veteran, to look at the environment and tell: "Yes, that's Ascalon, no doubt." The autumn vibes are clearly there and the ruins further in the back enhance the impression of familiarity. Although the foreground appears somewhat blurred, it blends surprisingly well with the other (sharp) objects in the illustration. These soft textures do not appear out of place in the slightest which is mind blowing to me. I don't know how you do it, but it's an absolute feat.
Lastly, I like to mention that I'm really delighted by the choice of treasures and how it turned out. Of course, I had a rough idea of some items. However, a simple idea in your mind is one thing. Visualizing that idea is another. Again: I'm super happy how good it turned out. The paw prints, scratch marks and the dirty fur are the icing on the cake.
What else can I say at this point other than that I love it? Fantastic job!
