to get as much moisture as that part of the world is reputed to, and not be densely forested, seems to me somehow strange. and i much prefer dense forests to open spaces. (although i actually liked nevada, which is open like that, although a LOT drier, for not having more humans then other life forms). (i like the fog too, which is almost as good as a forest, and i hear they get a lot of that)
Much of the Highlands of Scotland is historically heavily overgrazed and overlogged, and natural forest is restricted to a fraction of it's former range There are some marvelous charities trying to rectify this and bring back native tree species though, http://www.treesforlife.org.uk/ for example
