Except for all the controversies attached, Raf makes me think of the story I heard about Michael Jackson's childhood. His father had these boys he was pushing to do music because he wanted to be the dad of a musical act, but Michael was born with natural talent and skill and it meant he was drilled harder and rougher than his older brothers and the result was a kid who didn't get to have a childhood and who was actually embarrassed to perform in front of people. I'd see video of kids visiting his home and pleading with him to dance and he would put his head down and say something about how he wanted to see them try to dance instead and you could see that with people watching him so close he felt a little too seen and a little too much like he was performing for his father.
Which is to say I'm glad Raf didn't let his family destroy something he loved and was good at doing, even though they probably did a ton of damage to it that still needs repairs.

aw jfdj yeah Q nQ♡ good parallel.
For Raf, it's a complicated relationship.
He tries to put in an hour of practise most days, and has never actually dropped it. He always kinda dreads to pick the instrument up. But after the first 10-15 minutes, if he can manage to get into the flow, he's reluctant to stop. Playing the violin is just something that will always feel very familiar and natural to him, and for that reason, there'll always be a comfort to it. He doesn't mind practise! But as soon as you force a recital or other such performance onto him, that comfort is wholly eclipsed by the dread. Aimless meandering/objectiveless practise is genuinely where his comfort is. Just having the violin in his hands and having it produce the sounds he wants to hear--without any pressure to go in one direction or hit a specific goal.
Unsuprisingly, Margie has really turned him onto improvisational jazz during their jam sessions. He plays bass/double bass during those--but he carries those concepts with him to his violin practise, too♡
