Chomby’s final performance at the venue went better than he anticipated. He’d assumed that there’d be very few people showing up. Sure, on the final day, there were more open seats than the previous two days, but this still exceeded his expectations. His prepared, goodbye bit for the last day made him tear up with joy. He appreciated all the support everyone had been giving him throughout his stay, but now he was going to head to the next venue. That goodbye felt bittersweet. It stung a little, knowing he probably wouldn’t ever see any of these people again, but he knew it was necessary. Ever since he died, he became mindful of any of his interactions with people. If he liked someone, he always wanted it to end positively… and every time, he always wanted to say goodbye.
The following day, Chomby spent the daylight hours at the aquarium. He found a fascination with these strange, ocean creatures called ‘fish’. He’d only seen them in books or web pages, and anything he knew about them was because of Sarge’s weird amount of knowledge about marine life.
Midway through the day, Sam and Reese joined up with Chomby as a way to say goodbye. They went through the exhibits, took pictures, and even got a picture with the aquarium’s mascot, a blue poison dart frog. Overall, it was a great day. When it was time to leave, he hugged both Sam and Reese and said his goodbyes. They opted for one last picture, so he complied.
Chomby made it back to the hotel and immediately started texting Sarge. He showed Sarge all the pictures he took. His eyes lit up when he got to the final picture.
“This was a lot of fun, Sarge. Thanks,” Chomby texted.
“Still got a lot more on the agenda, though,” Sarge said. “How’re you holding up?”
“A bit sad,” Chomby replied. “But, it’s the kind of sad of having to say goodbye to someone who’s… still going to be alive and around, just not nearby.”
“You really liked hanging out with Sam and Reese, huh?” Sarge asked.
“Very much. Haven’t had many friends outside of you and Xenon. Kinda hard to do that when I’m… y’know.”
“Yeah, I do. Sorry. Can’t believe it took this long to get you something serviceable.”
Chomby had started to type out his reply, but Sarge quickly texted and interrupted him.
“Oh, so, just got a text from Xenon. It’s about the recording? Mind if we do a quick call?” Sarge asked.
Chomby arched a brow. But, without replying, he hit the call button. When Sarge answered, he immediately asked, “Hello, Sarge. What’s up?”
“Well, without beating around the bush too much,” Sarge said. “The recording is, unsurprisingly, disturbing.”
“I got that already,” Chomby rolled his eyes. He laid back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling.
“Well, it gets even weirder. You know what the guy said, right? Something about Ertemie?” Sarge asked. Chomby noted a bit of hesitation in the werewolf’s voice. This meant he was about to get some bad news.
“Y-yeah?”
“Well, Ertemie isn’t a city at all. It’s a building.”
Chomby sighed with relief. “Was that the bad news you were wanting to share?”
“Bad news?”
“Your tone of voice. Sorry,” Chomby said. “Continue.”
“Oh well, bad news? I don’t know. News in general, yeah. You see… this is where it gets a bit weirder,” Sarge said.
“Is it a building in a city I’m going to? PLEASE tell me it isn’t,” Chomby said. “I don’t know if I could handle another weird mystery right now!”
“Ahh, now THIS is where there’s good news and bad news,” Sarge said.
Chomby slapped a hand to his forehead and groaned. “Okay, well, what’s the good news?”
“Good news is that the Ertemie building isn’t in the city you’re going to,” Sarge said.
Chomby pushed his head into the pillow more. “Okay, well, that’s good then. Is the bad news that it’s in a different city nearby… or?”
“Bad news is that the Ertemie building is a conceptualized building that is going to be in the city you’re going to next.”
Chomby tried to think about what Sarge just said. “I… don’t follow.”
“Xenon found a news article that came out just today. It described, at the town’s press conference, that a new office building was being created. It’d be the city’s first skyscraper.”
“So, the person who made the recording was probably one of the designers for the Ertemie building? Was he spilling the beans or something?” Chomby asked.
“That’s where it gets worse. They haven’t even named the building yet. They’re letting the residents of the city vote on the name.”
“So, how did Xenon find out it was Ertemie?”
“Well, there’s four options to choose from. Laylock, Daytime, Galvin… and Ertemie. Still don’t know what Ertemie is. Maybe someone’s namesake or something.”
Chomby sat up. He felt his chest tighten. “You mean the building isn’t even named yet? And the only bit of evidence we have is that it’s a possible name for a new skyscraper?”
“Exactly,” Sarge said. “Vote ends in a few days. If you’re wanting to, you can ask around a bit about Ertemie.”
“Though, wouldn’t that make it like a self-fulfilling prophecy? Because I’d mention the name a lot, people would go based off of mere exposure… or whatever that thing is you called it?”
“Well, a self-fulfilling prophecy would require future sight in the first place. You know what the destination is, and in trying to avoid it, you end up being the one to cause it.” Sarge said. “This is just a tape recording. Could really mean anything. But, whoever this guy in the recording is, they know what Ertemie is…. And whatever happened there, it certainly wasn’t good.”
There was a moment of silence. “Be safe Chomby, okay?”
“I will, Sarge… thanks.” Chomby took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “Love you.”
“Love you, too. Talk to you later.” Sarge hung up.
Chomby lowered the phone to his side.
“Your stress levels are rising, Unit_Anomaly_Chomby. Is this a response to what Detective_Sergeant_Wolf said?” Choomb asked.
“Yeah. I guess it is.” Chomby placed his phone on the night stand then turned to his side. “Why is there a recording of some catastrophic event that alludes to a building that isn’t even made yet?”
“It is unknown if this building will be named Ertemie. But, perhaps there is another source of the name ‘Ertemie’ outisde of cities and structures?”
“Like what?” Chomby asked.
“Detective_Sergeant_Wolf did have a point. It could be someone’s namesake. A lot of family-run businesses would use the surname of an individual as the describing word,” Choomb suggested.
“But we’ve checked. Sarge has, too. There isn’t any business out there named Ertemie. Heck, it didn’t even seem that name existed until literally today when it was suggested for a poll.”
“That is an anomaly then, is it not?” Choomb asked.
“I dunno, Choomb. I guess, when we get to the city, I can go check where the building is supposed to be built? Though, if I find a tape recorder is there… or the Ertemie wins the poll to name the building, I’m going to freak out.”
“Best to assume it is an elaborate prank then… and get some sleep. Your plane leaves tomorrow at 4:00 P.M.”
“Thanks, Choomb,” Chomby said. “Did you need to recharge today?”
“Negative. Battery is higher than anticipated. Less power is required for a casual day versus a performance day. Would you like me to wake you in four hours?”
“Yes, I’d like that, Choomb.” Chomby sat up and unfastened his zipper to let Choomb out. Choomb then, immediately zipped back up to become Chomby again.
Chomby laid back down and turned off the night light. “Good night, Choomb.”
“Good night, Unit_Anomaly_Chomby. Alarm set for four hours from now. Sleep well.”
The next chapter to the story. Hopefully the art is okay. It's basically gonna be an additive story. The more it progresses, the more complete the drawing becomes.
