One good way to practise is trying sketches with light-sources, so you can see how the shading progresses on different objects. And you can experiment with different shading styles such as airbrushing or cell-shading.

light sources are good...but i find that sometimes, creating shading thats the most pleasing to the eye..regardless of an ACTUAL source can really give a painting life.

I always imagine a light source in my pics, then I work the shading in from there.
