Its possible! You might have it right with the idea of humanoids, its very possible that many artists don't believe in their sheer talent to do something unusual, because there's not that much difference between a Na'vi and an anthro or a human, and I've seen artists I've commissioned surprise themselves at their own results doing things they hadn't tried before.
