Hibiscus plants are normally associated with tropical areas, but there are actually many types that are native to colder climates. In our region they're called Swamp Mallow, since they occur mostly in swampy areas. They were also once called Marsh Mallow. And yes, marshmallows were originally made from them.

This is a hybrid one, bred to be shorter and produce larger flowers. I have two wild native varieties as well, but they haven't bloomed yet.
