The Circle of Eight set out to unravel the mystery of divination failing in Oerth—and all but Bigby and Mordenkainen perished without learning more, save that the threat was far graver than they had feared.
Below the fishing village of Hardby, four unlikely heroes emerged from a burning prison. United by shared chains, you vowed to uncover the cultists who captured you. The mighty Mordenkainen himself allied with you, tasking your group to investigate the elusive foe in the shadows. You learned this cult worshipped The Whispered One, a god of secrets presumed dead. Further inquiry revealed his name: Vecna, The Maimed God— once a mortal who ascended through lichdom into true divinity.
But knowledge breeds peril when prying into the God of Secrets who craves obscurity. The Whispered One plagued your dreams with warnings and promises - one of which was the threat of a betrayer in your troupe. After successfully saving The Friendly Arm’s Inn from an enchanted scarecrow catastrophe caused by the wandering bard Volothamp Geddarn, Ruska was met with a cruel ultimatum by an unassuming farmer: slay Neimar or die. Ruska’s blade found the farmer’s flesh, but the man bled changeling blood—her own father Ror, disguised, who’d twisted her memories with a Modify Memory spell and hidden his orders behind the guise of them being from the Unseelie Queen. At the last heartbeat, Neimar’s mother Alanna ripped him through a portal, sparing Ruska and dragging Ror away. In the aftermath, you learned that the sister you thought you knew was the changeling Lumi all along—stolen at birth by Ror, raised to betray her family. The real Ruska remains missing as her twin Lumi swore she could not complete her very first kill, and stowed her away instead. Now Alanna remains Ror’s prisoner, the real Ruska missing, and Lumi wrestles with her fractured past to choose who she truly wants to be.
In trying to thwart hag coven The Fetid Gaze’s schemes, both Lumi and Dimri fell into the coven’s snares. Galvanized, the remaining party pressed on to save both kin and friend. The battle against the hag coven seemed desperate until Cathal—an unassuming wizard and Neimar’s mentor—joined the frey. Iskra’s loyalties, as fluid as her form, changed mid battle when she grew fed up with Morá and Shúm selling out to serve The Whispered One. She freed her chosen daughter Dimri, praising Dimri’s fierce independence as the truest hag’s virtue.
Guided by whispers, you pursued the fallen Circle of Eight’s lost vaults in Greyhawk. Atop the necromancer Rary's tower, Neimar, unable to restrain her excitement, reached for the fabled book Ordinary Necromancy. In secret, Vecna had egged you on to pursue his tome. The instant your hand closed on the book, it unleashed a beacon of undeath that seared your flesh and bathed your eyes in unholy green anguish. Your scream summoned every corpse in Greyhawk—tomb, crypt, and sewer alike—to march in one vast tide of death toward the tower.
Bursting into the city’s streets, you found Kaius’s childhood home consumed by necrotic fury. Alarms clashed with screams; fires raged as wave after wave of undead pressed in. Kaius’s anguished cry—“What did you do?!”— was met only by Neimar's trembling whisper, “I was fooled.”
I love this game and my players.
It's been a lot of dreams coming true and living my best life with fantastic friends who are amazing storytellers!
