Calbern had done it. He had managed to pull off one of the biggest heists that he or any thief could ever muster: breaking into the Royali Vault. It was the Ty'Erian Family's personal vault and contained gold, foreign treasures and many valuable trinkets and times. Considering the size and contents of the vault as well as the family's own political and wealthy presence within the city, it was considered one of the biggest marks in all of Valerie. Many thieves had tried and failed with some captured and others barely escaping by the skin of their teeth. Each attempt only made it that much more alluring to the point that the local Thieves guild, the Nimble, had put out a contract rewarding anyone able to Pierce the vaults defenses and steal any of the artifacts known to be inside. And today, he did it!
There he was within the vault as his eyes lingered on gold, jewels, ancient times and all else he could line his pockets with. However, they were not his target. Not tonight at least. Instead, his attention fell to a particular trinket called the Ghostly Tear: a particular pendant with a single pearl that shimmered with such ethereal colors. It is unknown where it originated from but what is known is its value. With Nimble fingers, he placed the pendant within a small sack before making his way out of the vault. Of course, getting in was one thing. Getting out was going to be an issue as once outside, an alarm was sounded.
What he didn't know was the small pedestal the pendant sat upon had an intricate pressure plate placed beneath it. Once the pendant was lifted, the mechanism began to activate until hidden bells began to chime out through the vault. It didn't take long before Calbern could hear the echoing symphony of boots and armor heading his way. He hadn't much time nor options except for making a mad dash through the hallways in a desperate means of keeping unseen. He was successful to a certain degree but all it took was one turn down a dark, stone tunnel to find himself faced with a iron gate. He pressed his back against the smooth stone as he tried his best not to make a sound but such was easier said than done. His heartbeat beat so loudly like a church bell within his ears as panic began to set in. Soon the soft glow of a lantern illuminated the entrance, effectively signaling that he was trapped and moments away from being caught
While he was already expecting and imagining what tortures and punishments waited him, Calbern was unaware of the contents of the pouch in his hand beginning to glow. It pulsed and throbbed, radiating a certain aura as if coming to life. As Calbern tried to keep an eye out for a guard to come around the corner, ghostly hands began to emerge from the stone wall. Emerging from a pearlescent ectoplasm, a figure emerged as well with eyes and attention falling upon the young thief. It seemed whatever this thing was....it was either attracted to the pendant or was somehow connected to if it. Regardless, Calbern would not get a moments warning before the ghostly figure grabbed him and in a split instance, it disappeared. The one guard walked further in, thinking he had the thief trapped but when he flashed the lantern around the corner, he was met with emptiness.
Whatever happened to the thief...no one knows. To this day, he has not been seen as the Ty'Erian Family has put out bounties for his capture and return of the pendant. But they would never find him no matter how hard they tried. No, the spirit of the pendant has him now. Not punished or tortured. No. He is enthralled to the spirit. Subservient to its whims as his body is now the spirits plaything.
