CW: Implied Vore at the end of the chapter.
Nighttime fell upon Canada’s southern reaches. Kate and Zoww were getting closer to their goal, walking through the dark forest together. After a little while, they simply stopped talking, but still exchanged glances from time to time, either one smiling at the other occasionally. Both liked that. Eventually, Kate sighed and looked up, squinting her eyes.
“Guh, the canopy is too dense. I really hope we find a tree line soon. It’s hard to tell where we’re going without a clear view of the sky.” Kate bemoaned.
Zoww caught up to her side and looked around.
“Probably best to just keep heading this way. We go any other direction and we can get turned around. I’m way more used to open plains. This forest thing is starting to get old.”
Kate would give her spotted friend an unamused glare. She didn’t seem to appreciate that last comment.
“Well, hopefully when I come to Africa I won’t get too tired of the heat on the first day. I’ve been in forests my whole life. It’s hard to get lost if you know how to navigate them like the back of your paw.” She chuckled and nudged his side when she saw he was looking a little remorseful.
“But you are right. We’re still heading opposite of the North Star. That’s south. That’s where we need to be going.” Kate added as they began to walk again.
As Zoww followed, he blinked in surprise.
“Wait, hold on, you know how to map the stars too? That’s cool! I was taught the same thing by my dad when he was still…around.” His ears folded back a little, and Kate slowed her pace down.
“My dad taught me that too. He was the leader of our pack. He basically taught all of us what we know. I have no idea if he’s still around or not.” Kate looked down, sadness in her voice.
The conversation was suddenly cut short when a strange sound echoed over the air, quite far away. It wasn’t a howl, but something more artificial. It had come from straight ahead. The pair looked at one another before they cantered forward, eventually reaching a tree line. Finally exiting the stretch of forest they’d been in for hours, they both scaled up a hill, and at the top, they saw ahead where the noise had come from.
Stretching out nearly a mile in front of them, nestled into surrounding farmlands and stretches of trees was an open, currently filled up fairground where lights were currently being shut off all around, and PA systems were being checked. A few strangling cars were driving away from the place. Both their jaws dropped at the sight.
Zoww shook his head and spoke up first.
“Wow…have you ever seen anything like this before, Kate? It’s…huge!”
“No. I’ve seen human structures before but nothing this…massive. It doesn’t look so populated from here. I wonder if…” Kate sat down on her haunches and tilted her head up to howl suddenly. Zoww leaned back, never having heard Kate do this before. It looked stunned to say the least.
When Kate stopped, she tilted her head.
“What? You ever seen a wolf howl before?”
Zoww shook his head, trying to find words to say. But the sound of flapping wings made his ears peek up. On cue, Paddy and Marcel flew down atop the hill and joined Kate, hearing her howling.
Paddy smiled.
“We had a feeling you were going to call for us once you laid eyes on the fairground. I imagine you two have a few questions?”
Kate nodded slowly as Zoww sat down and got comfortable at this spot.
“Uhh, yeah. What the heck is a fairground exactly? I smell a lot coming from down there.”
Zoww’s stomach gurgled and he nodded, licking his chops.
“A lot of uh, meat, let’s just say.”
Marcel chuckled.
“That would likely be the livestock they keep in there. County fairs are a way for humans to get together and have fun in these rural parts. It’s also the perfect opportunity for contests and business opportunities! Fathers often trade and sell their animals here.”
Kate sighed.
“Meaning they’d definitely be unhappy if a chicken or two went missing. Bummer.” She then shook off her hungry thoughts for a moment.
“It’s right in our path. You guys think we can cross through it without too much trouble? It’ll definitely be the better option rather than going around.”
Paddy and Marcel took a moment to look at one bother, both weighing the options in their heads. Marcel spoke up first.
“Normally, that would be a very bad idea. But, it is past their closing time. There won’t be that many humans around, and in all likelihood they won’t be carrying guns in the event that they spot you. But it would be a risk either way.”
“Yes, though, perhaps there’s an animal in there that might be able to lend a paw. Give you the best route through the fair and avoid running into any humans slinking about.” Paddy added.
Zoww would tilt his head to the side.
“So wait, if it’s closing time for them, why don’t all the humans go home and leave?”
“Well, many of them stay and sleep nearby wherever livestock they brought with them. There’s space inside of the stables for sleeping bags and the like. I’d try to avoid those areas if possible. We’ll circle around and keep an eye on the ground for you both.” Paddy added.
“Alright. I think we can do this. Let’s just hope we find at least one animal willing to talk to two carnivores. I remember the two of you needed a little convincing when we first met.” Kate smirked at the two birds. Zoww gave Kate a surprised glance before he nodded in agreement to her.
Marcel and Paddy giggled nervously together and waved the traveling pair farewell. The two of them started down the hill towards the fairground. Kate had a confidence entering this situation that surprised herself on the inside. With her experiences in Jasper. The little sliver of hope she was holding onto had ballooned into marching onwards into potential human affairs.
—
Getting in was easy enough. The human at the front gate was sleeping on the job and his face was covered by the magazine he’d been reading. Immediately, the scent of many different animals gathered closely together reached their noses. Just as soon, the pair found several rows of cattle pens. Kate looked around in awe, her tail swaying.
“Wow, I’ve never seen this many cows before. Not in one place.” She softly said. “They look so tasty, too. They’ve been eating super good..” She trailed off before Zoww nudged her a little.
“Hey, now’s not the time to let the cravings take over. We’re trying not to get spotted by humans, remember?” He chuckled, finding Kate’s appetite in this situation endearing.
Kate huffed and continued down the concrete path they were on. “You try having to eat for four and not salivate at that much beef right in front of you. If we come across any pigs or chickens you might have to restrain me.” The two shared a chuckle as they cleared the cow holding area, getting closer towards some of the rides. They passed by many different food trucks that were closed down for the night.
Zoww licked his lips and then shook his head, doing his best to keep his eyes forward. Kate noticed his own cravings for human food start to flare back up, and the golden wolf gave him a look, which made him roll his eyes.
“Okay, you got me. We should try to find something to eat here. But it’s gonna be hard without any humans noticing us in the act.”
“Well, ain’t this a surprise? A hungry mama wolf and a hungry hyena walk into a fairground. There’s definitely a joke in there, maybe a song!” A sudden, sultry voice was heard overhead. It made Kate and Zoww perk up in unison.
“Who’s there?” Kate threatened a growl as she swiveled her gaze all around. Zoww was doing the same, moving around Kate.
“A friend. Someone who can definitely sympathize with your situation, mama. Someone who knows this place like the back of her paws. I know what you’re thinking. How can we possibly trust this mysterious stranger? Well, let's just say a pair of little birdies I know let me know you’d be coming.”
Zoww and Kate shared a look and nodded, both agreeing to give the stranger a chance.
“Okay then. Why don’t you come out and show yourself then. My friend and I could definitely use a navigator. This place is built like a maze of metal and food!” Kate said, motioning to all the food trucks, shops, and rides in their immediate area.
“I know. Says an awful lot about the human condition if you ask me. There’s a makeshift village eastbound a few hundred feet in the trees. I’ll meet you both over there. It’s a quiet part of the place where we can talk safely.
While the two clearly weren’t sold, Kate did trust Paddy and Marcel, and if this was a friend of theirs, then she could likely be trusted too. Nodding to Zoww, Kate changed directions towards the small canopy of trees nearby. After passing more food trucks and shops advertising all sorts of things like hats, hermit crabs, or easy ways to get to heaven, they passed under an archway and into a throwback of a town. It was like a plaza of old world buildings. At the far end was a train station nestled in between a blacksmith shop and general store, all of them roped off.
“Is this what a human habitat looks like? Surprised there’s nobody around.” Zoww commented.
“Kinda. At least it was in these parts a century ago. Nowadays it’s a bit different. Some humans would kill to live in a spot like this. Too bad for them, this is my joint. It helps that this is where the mice like to hang out after helping themselves to the more poorly secured food trucks.” The voice giggled softly.
Kate rose a brow as she got the hint.
“Okay, kitty cat, we’ve come over to your spot. Can we get down to business so we can be on our way. Our mutual friends told you that I’m in a bit of a hurry, didn’t they?”
“Oh they did. I promise we won’t be here all night. I like a lady who cuts right to the chase. Up here.”
Kate and Zoww looked up to a branch on the tree in the train station’s lawn, seeing a feline shadow lounging back with a pair of flirtatious yellow eyes. The shadow leaned back and fell from the branch, landing right on her feet, though Kate could tell there was a bit more to her silhouette than the average house cat. Coming onto the path from the shade was a pregnant Siamese cat. Kate and Zoww both blinked in surprise as the feline took a few swaying steps towards the pair.
“Wow, it all makes sense now what you said earlier.” Zoww said.
“Oh good. I was half expecting one of you to ask how many rodents I had for dinner. Three, if you’re that curious. Good to make your acquaintances. My name's Gwendolyne. You can just call me Gwen for short. Good friends call me G. I’ll be your tour guide tonight.” Gwen winked at them.
“I appreciate the help, Gwen. I’ll be honest, I’ve never met a cat before. Jasper doesn’t get many strays. I’m Kate and this is Zoww.” She motioned to the hyena, who smiled at Gwen. Gwen smiled back and walked closer to him.
“I thought I heard some birds chirping about an escaped hyena from the menagerie up north. Far from home, aren’t we sweetie?” Gwen smiled.
Zoww was immediately flustered by the feline’s flirting. His tail wagged and he giggled sheepishly, taking a seat on his haunches and putting a paw on his chest.
“Heh, that’s one way to put it. I’ve been adjusting, though. Kate here has been a very good teacher.” This made Kate smile.
“Looks to me like you’ve been thriving, big boy. People bring their pets to this place every year. I know a figure that’s been absorbing human food when I see one.” Gwen came right over, and prodded a paw into Zoww’s gut. It responded with a deep grumble, and Gwen pointed an ear towards the hungry sound.
“Oh yeah, that’s a grease trap if I’ve heard one. Looks like we’re due for a pit stop on the way. What do you say, Kate?”
“If we can do it without getting caught, I won’t say no to something to eat. I’m probably more hungry than he is. My pups and I are wasting away.” Kate nodded, taking a glance towards her bump, the pups wiggling at the promise of supper.
Gwen sauntered around them and began to leave the village the way they came in, with Kate and Zoww looking at one another.
“I think our tour guide likes you, spots.” Kate softly teased.
Zoww blushed and chuckled.
“She’s definitely got some character on her. Now let's go before our bellies wake the humans up or something. Or those pups decide to make a surprise appearance.”
Kate pouted before she nudged Zoww to his paws and both trotted after the swaying siamese as she turned her head back to make sure they were following. Once out of the village, they were back in between the endless shops and the occasional ride that towered over the trio.
“So, where exactly are we headed, Gwen?” Zoww asked as the two larger animals caught up.
The cat kept her gaze frontwards as they passed by a set of larger rides that were clearly meant for a more thrill seeking crowd.
“See the large building in the distance past all these rides? That’s the race track. It’s why there’s so many horse stables here. If you’re both so hungry, I have a big friend who can help get what ya’ll are aching for.”
Kate nodded along. “Go on.”
“She’s a mare named Autumn. We met last year and she showed me how it feels to be one of those jockey fellows. It was fun. Sadly, I’m too far along to really feel like doing through such excitement.” Gwen sighed with a smile on her face.
Kate would exhale softly. “Yeah, well I wish I could say the same about myself. But here I am, on the run from my own pack, about to burst with pups, and the one thing keeping me going is the hope that things will be more peaceful in Idaho.”
“Goodness, girl. No wonder the golfing birds wanted me to guide you. You really could use all the help you can get. Makes me wonder how big a gentleman the hyena is back there, escorting you all this way.” Gwen cast another sultry glance back to Zoww.
The hyena gulped and shook his head back to Kate. “Do you think that your pack might follow us all the way to where we’re going? Do you think that the guy who took over would be that desperate?”
Kate’s brow furrowed. “I mean, I wouldn’t put it past Tony. If he was so scared that his son didn’t see eye to eye with him that he forced us to have pups just so he could raise them as his replacements, he might just be crazy enough to follow us all the way into the states. I don’t know what we’ll do if that happens. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really plan that far ahead.”
Zoww was lost for words for a moment.
“Well, we'll figure something out. Once we meet with your sister, there’ll be three of us. You mentioned that she’s clever. Maybe she’s already got a plan.”
“Maybe.” Kate shrugged. I just hope she’s okay out there. She’s never been so far from home on her own before. If something happens to her, I’ll never forgive myself.” Kate took in a sharp breath as she wrestled with her emotions. It was the first time she showed how vulnerable she really was inside since she woke up in the zoo.
Zoww looked at his new friend with remorse, and was about to try comforting her, but then Gwendolyn stopped and looked back towards them.
“Sorry to interrupt, but we’re almost there. This little crossroads here is where we’ll head to Autumn. To the right. Then we’ll head past the track where ya’ll can escape into the woods again. Are we sure we wanna do the pit stop first?”
In the center of this area was a chicken statue. Kate and Zoww were both staring up at it. When the question was posed to them, they looked at one another, and their stomachs both rumbled in unison. They then looked to Gwendolyn.
“We’d best.” Zoww stated, with Kate nodding in agreement. Gwen rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
—
After they passed a few long buildings full of stables, Gwen led them over to the entrance of one of the buildings and meowed out. There was a loud huff from inside, and a young adult mare stuck her head out of the window with a yawn.
“Gwen? I thought you said that you weren’t feeling up to riding this year.” The horse then looked down at Kate and Zoww and blinked in surprise.
“Is that…what I think it is?”
Gwendolyn nodded.
“Your eyes do not deceive you, my friend. These two are on the run, and they could use some of your strength to get a little junk food.”
Kate immediately glared at Gwen, with Zoww happily gasping.
“Junk food?! I assumed you’d be getting us…I don’t know, something with meat on it.”
“As much as I’d love to let you two into the chicken building, they’re all in cages and they are really loud when they need to be. Not worth the risk. Fair food would be a much safer bet. Sorry, baby.”
Kate rolled her eyes. “Okay, fine, and don’t call me baby.” She pouted.
Autumn chuckled. “So, we’re breaking and letting them enter. Okay, I can do that. I’ve been feeling pent up lately being in this stable for hours on end.”
Gwen jumped up and then with her claws, undid the lock that was keeping the mare inside. Once the door was opened, Gwen jumped atop Autumn’s back. Gwen directed the equine’s movements, while Kate and Zoww followed behind, They went around the stables and then into the main roads of the fair. Once they came across a large cart with art of various comfort foods on the side and top, Gwen jumped down to the grass and met with the two travelers.
“Here we are! Now, watch the magic happen.” Gwen smirked and turned to face the brown furred mare.
Autumn nodded and turned her rear towards the cart. With deep breath and focus, the mare leaned, and busted the door open with a kick from both back legs.
“HI-YA! Wow, that felt good. Dig in, small ones. I should probably head back.”
Kate and Zoww both thanked Autumn as she galloped back towards the stables, with Gwen waving her off. Then, Zoww cantered into the cart and Kate followed him in. There wasn’t a lot of space, but Zoww immediately followed his nose and pushed open a compartment built into the wall. Inside were large plastic bags full of popcorn and cotton candy.
Kate moved in beside the now panting hyena and rose a brow.
“What the heck is this stuff?” she asked sceptically.
“I don’t know exactly, but I know it smells great, and it’s edible.” Zoww sighed dreamily, and immediately broke open the plastic bags with his jaws and dug in. Kate stepped back as this action made a bit of a mess.
“Gwen?” Kate turned back towards the service counter of the cart, where Gwendolyn sat down.
The siamese chuckled. “It’s quite okay. At least give it a try. Hopefully it’ll be the only time you have to eat the stuff. I’d definitely try the cotton candy first. It’s sweet and gives you a sugary jump.”
With some trepidation, Kate shrugged and moved in to Zoww’s left, sticking her head and tearing open the puffy substance. Once she tore a few chunks and got used to the strange texture, Kate smiled to herself, actually enjoying the taste of it. She even leaned over and had a brief snarl-off with Zoww to try some of the popcorn.
Eventually, the pair finished. Kate stopped after she felt like she’d eaten just enough, and dropped out of the cart, stretching her back and looking back.
“Well, that was nice. I see why Humphrey likes that stuff, or you for that matter. Zoww?” she called to him again when she noticed he hadn’t followed her.
“UUURRRRP! One sec..” Zoww groaned from inside.
Kate blinked and sneered a bit while Gwendolyn came around the side with wide eyes. Zoww lumbered down from the doorway, panting as his now visibly bloated belly noisily swayed full of the digesting combination of both popcorn and cotton candy. Whatever Kate hadn’t eaten, Zoww had happily gobbled up with gusto.
“Hoo, yeah. That was dinner!” The hyena hiccuped and stood rather boastingly before his friends.
Kate blinked and tilted her head. “Oh my. You look like a balloon animal. Way worse than me right now.”
“I agree. Careful you don’t eat too much of that stuff, honey. You’ll give yourself a bellyache and at least five pounds. Come on, let’s get you two outta here before anyone notices we ate their shift’s supply of human treats.”
Zoww nodded and gave an innocent smile to Kate, who rolled her eyes at him with a soft chuckle. “Heh, HIC! Let’s go, slowly.”
From there, the trio made their way back to the chicken statue and then turned to the left. Zoww was doing his best not to labor in his breathing, but he’d eaten so much that it was hard to manage, his swollen belly swaying unabated. Kate couldn't help but steal a few games at the stuffed hyena before her attention went back to Gwen as they began to pass right under the shadow of the race track entrance and towards the southernmost area of the fairgrounds.
“Gwen, I was wondering, if you’re okay with me asking, who’s the father of your kittens? I guess I’m just curious why you're out here by yourself.” Kate was careful with her words.
The siamese glanced back with a mischievous gaze. “Careful sweetheart, curiosity killed the cat. But, since you asked, the father was another stray from the city. See, I was born and actually had a human in France. But, things happened and I managed to catch a boat all the way here. I’ve been adrift ever since, but I always find my way here every year. That stray, I think his name was McCavity or something odd like that, was taken in by my looks. I was feeling needy, and I liked the way he spoke. So, I sang to him, and next thing I know, my stomach is feeling funny a few weeks later. Now, here I am, in a slightly less stressful situation than you.”
“Well, at least your kittens are a happy accident. My situation is a bit more…” Kate trailed off before Gwen cut her off.
“You don’t have to tell me and relive it all over again. I overheard you going back and forth with Zoww. I’m real sorry, sugar. I do hope you can get to your destination in one piece.” Gwen spoke genuinely, and Kate smiled before the group came to a stop once more.
In front of them was a field that led right into the forest again. The rest of the fairgrounds were behind them. They finally made it through together, with Kate breathing a sigh of relief. Gwen turned around and began to address Zoww as the bloated hyena sat on his haunches to catch his breath again. Something else was catching Kate’s attention however. To the immediate right was a maze of alpaca pens with drapes over them. Kate heard something around the corner of it, and sauntered over while Gwen continued serenading her friend about his figure and appetite.
When she rounded the corner, Kate saw a small flock of hens wandering around the entryway of the enclosures, pecking at the grass for seeds and earthworms. Kate grinned and fully came around.
“A little late to be out by yourselves ain’t it, funny looking birds? Oh well, this mama isn’t just letting her pups settle for junk food for dinner. You’re all mine~.” Kate licked her chops and dove forward quickly.
Gwen had Zoww plopped over on his back as she racked her claws over a sweet spot behind his shoulderblade, playfully teasing and tickling him. He was giggling rather intensely and trying not to break into a laugh.
“Who’s a good fat hyena? Yes, you are! No wonder everyone says your kind laugh all the time. You're more ticklish than my old friend Fred and you’re just as plump as he was. Say, where is your friend?” Gwen finally noticed that Kate wandered off.
The siamese jumped over Zoww and strutted forward. The hyena heaved up to his paws and had to catch his balance before following.
“Oof! I’m here! Sorry I wandered off, I saw something I wanted to uh, check out.” Kate called over to them before she waddled into their view, now looking much like Zoww did in terms of their now expanded waistlines. Kate chuckled when she saw their jaws gape open, before she belched up a plume of feathers and then innocently picked at her teeth with a claw.
“Heh! Sorry, I couldn’t resist…”
All three of them began to laugh together.
To be continued….
