A three part commission by the amazing Inkblot123: https://www.deviantart.com/inkblot123 who I've been a fan of for years! Riley Reinhardt, presenting the news in Seawind City.
I managed to write a bit of a flash fiction to accompany:
The van screeched to a stop, equipment tumbling and bouncing inside. The screeching of the occupant continued for a moment longer, before the black shoe of Riley Reinhardt kicked the door open, practically bouncing out into the city streets. She was a pale monkey woman, short and athletic, dressed in a dark blazer and pencil skirt with a pink button up shirt. Three rings clinked where they adorned her tail, as as manic excitement glinted in her eyes.
“We’re here- let’s go let’s go let’s go! Call on Three? One two three, NEWS!” She put her hand out for a huddle and had pumped her first skywards before the vans other two occupants had even stepped out.
“Yay, news,” Trevor, a heavyset sheep man gave her a thumbs up, sarcasm ignored as always. He pulled open the side of the MNN van, and began to heft out the boom mic. “This the right spot.”
“Yep- got a tip, got a warning, bombthreat, the punks are up to somethin’,” Jill, a newt woman with dark bangs padded out more slowly, picking up a camera as Riley darted around her.
“Okay, yes, previously covered over their thefts with property destruction- different than usual, new MO? What are they stealing? What are they hiding with the explosives? Why not their usual bubble theme? Is Riptide still top dog, or has someone else grabbed control?” She yammered as Trevor picked the monkey woman up, and carried her over to the street, a large warehouse behind her.
“Good questions, let’s wait till we’re on air, huh- oh dang.” Trevor muttered as another news van, this one a cyan blue with dark SCN branded on it, pulled up alongside them.
“Seawind City News.” Jill hissed quietly, “Great. Might as well pack up now- they’re going to snatch this scoop.”
“What? No- no, we were here first!” Riley gasped.
“Yeah, but… you know, you’re kinda green, Mayhem’s a smaller network, and…” she bit her lips as a caramel skinned lady in a tight fitting red suit stood gracefully from the van. “And they’ve got her. Carmen Vault. She’s just gorgeous.”
“Yeah- but… consider this.” The monkey woman smiled, undid one button, and posed playfully.
“Yay. Chest fur. Never seen that before.” Trevor rolled his eyes.
“My chest isn’t furry- it’s just my collar- fine, how about this?” She turned, jumped over the police tape blocking the street, and sprinted fifty feet forward, before spinning around. “Right, live on the scene!”
“No- Riley, that could be dange- oh no, we’re going on air! Camera, boom!” Trevor called out, kneeling to set up the camera as sparks and flames burst around the windows of the warehouse.
Grinning that her timing had worked, Riley tapped her feet, smiled, and was ready to chatter as soon as she was on air. From experience, Trevor had fitted a clip on mic to his excited presenter, knowing that she rarely stayed near the boom for long, and so she was audible while Jill zoomed in, and the monkey girl was soon presenting the story. The rivals of SCN scoffed, losing time as they struggled to find an angle to shoot that didn’t get the monkey lady in the background.
