I originally sketched this out because of a discussion about Batgirl designs in Shio-Bari's server. We were talking about which designs we liked best for each Batgirl, and what elements we preferred in their designs. In the process of explaining what I thought the ideal costume for Stephanie Brown would be, I decided to sketch it out...and got a bit carried away doing all three of them.
In front is Cassie. The main inspiration is her classic stitched batgirl costume of course, but I also decided to incorporate elements of a ninja design that Shio had posted. I do like the kind of tunic/wrapped style. I think it complements the stitched elements well.
Next is Stephanie, and it's a combo of her "standard" batgirl design with the ridged padding and general shaping, but using more of the elements of her original Spoiler costume like the high boots, the folded gloves, the cowl, and the overall coloration. I even redesigned her belt to better resemble the bandolier she wore as Spoiler.
Finally, Barbara. This is mainly styled after her Burnside costume, with the biker leathers, boots, and double-sided cape. But, it's also taking a few cues from her older grey and blue costume with the gloves and the tighter fit.
One thing I really wanted to do was keep the shape language of each one distinct.
Cassie is sharp. Her symbol, her tunic, her belt, her spines, her ears, even her cape all end in very sharp points. Her fingers almost look clawed. The intent is that all these sharp points make the stitching feel less makeshift and more deliberate, they shouldn't look like it's patched together but more like it completes the appearance somehow. The design conceals elements like the shape of her body and her facial features, accentuating the sharpness to show her as withdrawn yet dangerous.
Steph has gaps. Her belt is clasped with a ring, her cowl is an actual hood, only a blank mask beneath. Her costume is broken up only by a dark padding trimming the sides, something less seen, and rather than the bold yellows or gold, her symbol is a more subtle silver. Her tall boots stretch out and over her knees, her gloves are folded back, and she's missing a spine on each of her gloves. Her cloak is wrapped a little loosely, and to complete it all, her cape even has holes in it. Her design is meant to evoke a sense of empty space, of missing something, or perhaps being the thing that's missing. Less captivatingly mysterious than the others, and yet somehow more of a mystery herself.
Barbara is soft, but practical. Her design is largely in soft, round shapes, except where distinct pragmatic choices are made. The soles and lacing on her boots. The tight seams of her costume, and the line of her zipper. The clasps where her cape connects, and the collar showing a deliberate choice for her cowl to be a separate piece. The design is bold, and deceptive...it looks soft, the sharp elements may seem like exceptions...but her emblem is the sharpest of the three. Like her two-tone cape, she seems bright and disarming at a glance, but is just as ready to embrace the shadows as her mentor.
