The only reason was because of how you can get all other colors by either RGB (additive color model) or CMY (subtractive color model).
I originally wanted to have markings spread out like a hexagram (with each side being one color) but I figured the gradient would look better.

Fair! I'm (loosely) familiar with colour schema. I guess in this case, all the rest of him makes up the K of CMYK then.
That definitely seems like it would be difficult to map onto a snout, compared to simple stripes, too. So I can definitely understand going for a simpler design.
