Demona stepped back, shocked and scared. “W-what? Here?”
“Dem, you’ve been acting strange ever since you got here.” Chelsey said, I’m not the only person who notices. “And then… THAT?” She pointed back into the school. “What the heck was that?”
Demona held her purse and necklace close, “Do we have to talk about it out here, where people might hear us?”
“Fine, let’s head for a cafe or something,” Chelsey said, “But no running away from me.”
“Couldn’t it be where there's less people?” Demona asked, only to see Chelsey shake her head.
They went to a coffee shop and ordered drinks, then, after sitting down, Chelsey just kept staring at her. “What did I just see?”
“It’s a long story..”
“That’s why I got a large latte..”
Demona sighed, then began to explain, “There’s this book I have been studying… I know this sounds like nonsense, but after what you saw how do you not believe in magical books?”
“It’s a bit of a leap,” Chelsey shrugs, “Go on.”
“I’ve been studying it and using what it talks about.” Demona continued, “But now I have to use that same magic to keep me like this. My real self. Without it, I turn back into what you just saw in a couple hours.”
“And you didn’t just stop after what it did to you the first time?” Chelsey asked, “Or did you have a reason for not taking this to the government and news?”
“Yes.” Demona said, “I don’t want to risk starting a Salem Witch Trial event.”
“If that’s the case, then we’re back to my first question.” Chel said, “Why do you keep using it? Why didn’t you stop after the first incident?”
“Chel..” Demona looked her in the eyes, “This magic saved my life.”
Chel just looked back at her, disbelief and annoyance, “You have to be kidding me.”
“I’m serious, let me show you.” And Demona pulled out her phone, opening to a news article from years ago. “I was there, at this accident in Libya. I went there with my mother and one of the cranes tipped over.”
Chelsey leaned close, reading the article, “Your arms and legs were crushed while the rest of you were in between a gap on the crane’s arm.” She looked up to Demona again, “But it says that the girl’s arms were amputated.”
Demona lifted a hand and wiggled her fingers, “The book… it wasn’t perfect, but the more I study the more I can figure out. Someday I’ll stay like this for good.”
At that, Chelsey started to smile. “Okay, Okay… I get it now. I won’t tell anyone about what happened. But, you should figure out some things, your behavior at work is looking strange to everyone.”
