Structural dissociation of personality is a protective mechanism whereby the psyche splits into parts that perform different functions when trauma occurs. These parts are not fully-fledged “personalities,” but rather autonomous fragments of consciousness with different roles and degrees of access to memories and emotions.
It is as if partitions have appeared in this house, and some rooms have become isolated from others. One part lives in one room, and in another — a “frightened child” who is still experiencing trauma. The interaction between these parts can be conflictual or coordinated.
“Pure Cain” was formed as a protective mechanism to shield the “anxious-empathic” part from further trauma. It is a kind of “internal guard” that is ready to do anything to protect the vulnerable part of the personality.
