Charles is the foreman at the construction site where Jeremy works.
Have I mentioned that Jeremy works as a builder? Just about everyone he knows* thinks it's beneath him. Oh Jeremy, you're so smart, you're so good at science and math. You shouldn't be driving a backhoe!
Idiots! Because that's how education works, doesn't it? You shame someone enough and suddenly they have a STEM degree.
To their credit, Jeremy's parents are very supportive of him and whatever he decides to do with his life, even if it takes him a while to figure things out. Note the implicit assumption that he hasn't figured things out, which Jeremy has never said.
Anyway, this isn't about Jeremy. But it also is because Charles is Jeremy's boss.
Charles looks like the kind of guy that... how do I put this? You don't know which way he swings but you kind of hope he swings your way, y'know?
But he doesn't. Wife and three kids. That's never been a hard barrier before, but it's not a good sign.
And then there are his friends. His friends call him "Chuck", and they all look like the kind of people who'd call him Chuck. In other words they look like him. So one of them, maybe?
Nope. All straight as arrows.
It's not like Jeremy has a complex about it. Charles is a good boss. A really good boss, in fact. He's not the kind of person to sit inside a trailer and give orders all day. He gets out there with his crew. He treats everyone fairly and always makes himself available to listen.
And he just... it just seems like nothing fazes him. He seems like the kind of guy who has things figured out. He has this deep belly laugh with just a hint of a gravelly smoker's voice that somehow makes you instantly forget about your own problems when you hear it. And you will hear it often because Charles laughs a lot.
But Jeremy just can't bring himself to call him Chuck.

* You know who doesn't think that? Sully. Sully's possibly even better at math and science than Jeremy is. Then again, Sully seems to be doing fake science for a fake scientist. The point is, Sully never got a degree either and he's enjoying his life doing... whatever happens down in that burrow.
And both Sully and Charles are very musky. Maybe Jeremy is just attracted to smelly guys.
