Engine Playground for FirCirrus [Art Fight 2025]
This is the Art Fight attack I did for
fircirrus of her character Cirrus (and her boyfriend's character Oats).
I went back to digital for my fourth attack. Cirrus and I had talked before about Cirrus working for SimmTech's automotive department. My original plan was to have Cirrus standing over a car, but I couldn't find a reference that worked properly and the idea wasn't really resonating with me.
Then I stumbled across a photo of the inside of an engine taken from a different angle and the idea suddenly became clear to me: Cirrus had been shrunken down and was exploring it like a giant indoor playground. (This may have also been influenced by me playing Lorn's Lure recently.) Once I had the idea in my mind, it was easy to sketch out a few poses of her jumping around.
Unfortunately, I realized a bit after that there were a few issues with using the particular photo reference. For one, I wasn't sure if that image had any licensing restrictions. But also, the Art Fight rules were worded in a way that made it seem like I couldn't use photos I didn't take and I couldn't trace any photos (to which paint-overs feel like effectively the same thing). This left me with two options: either get an image I could use and redraw all of the poses, or find a way to recreate the reference without tracing.
I went for the latter option and used a skill beloved by all traditional painters to move their sketches to larger canvases: the grid method. I divided the photo and my canvas into a 6x6 grid. I blocked in the large shapes, then worked one section at a time to add details until I created what you see here.
