“Most islands are home to some kinds of dangerous wild animals, but some of the ones on Nightshade Islands are really something else, one of the most notable being the ‘Plague Cats,’ as they are known.
Most of them seem very similar to panthers or leopards, in appearance and size, but with strange spines growing out of their backs which let off a faint, sickly green glow, as do their claws and teeth. This is more than just for show though, a scratch from their claws or spines, or a bite, makes a person very, very sick, like an illness, hence their name.
Dr Brightstone studied them during his time on the island and a lot of what I know about them I learned from his notes. He could never quite figure out if it was poison, or something else, that they inflicted, just that if left untreated it was fatal. Fortunately, he found a combination of herbs in the jungle that could cure it easily. Thankfully the blessings that protect me, and my hair flower mean that their scratches and bites just sting alittle for a few minutes, but nothing more, and my leaves are good defense against their claws.
They are not ‘evil,’ they are just animals, but they aggressive and very territorial, each ‘pack’ relentlessly attacking any potential threat that enters their claimed area. Every pack has a leader, what Dr Brightstone called an ‘Al-fa’, which not only leads the pack, but is physically much bigger and stronger than the rest. They are ‘nock-tern-all’, or night active, prowling their areas at night, their sickly green glow looming in the darkness.
The best way I’ve found to deal with them is to avoid their territories entirely, unfortunately, since acouple of the packs seem to like the area around acouple the Ruins I have to keep an eye on I can’t always avoid them. When I do need to head into these areas I’ll go during the day, when they are asleep, and try to be as fast, and quiet, as I can be. Bright flashes of light, like from the Wisps, can scare off the normal ones, but not the ‘al-fa’, and they are all very easily distracted by fish, but of course, carrying fish through the jungle isn’t the easiest thing to do.
I have found that all Plague Cats are absolutely terrified of Ozzy, just the sight of him and the normal ones can’t get away fast enough, and all he has to do is let off a low hiss and even an ‘al-fa’ will turn tail and run. Just one more reason to be thankful for my big scaly buddy.”
Expanding the lore and bestiary of Nightshade Island I present another dangerous creature that lurks in the dark recesses of the jungle, the Plague Cats.
BAB did a great job rendering these feline beasts, giving them truly fierce and menacing appearances. The small ones definitely look a lot like more dark furred jungle cats, but the green spines and claws add a nice touch to them. The bigger one though is extremely imposing, with a great feeling for its strength and ferocity, with its pointed ears looking almost horn-like, enhancing the sinister look. The dull grey coloring really makes the green of their spines, claws and teeth stand out, and look all that more prominent. Overall, these do not look like the kind of creatures you wanna mess with, especially on their own turf. ~^
