well i just thought id drop this here to get some suggestions..i havent even finished inking it (his hair is gonna take me a year and a half to ink x.x) but i was simply thinking i didnt even have a color scheme thought out for him yet so i started this up

Also, don't forget color schemes. Primary, complimentary, split complementary, monochromatic, analogus, triadic, and tetradic.
Frankly, considering the character's species, a nightmare and unicorn mix, this means generally dark fur and bright hair, eyes, and possibly even the horn. Almost a black color for the fur, and maybe flame-colors for the lighter sections I had mentioned.
The reason for that particular arrangement of color is that a nightmare is often depicted as a demonic horse. Black fur, a flaming mane and eyes, etc.

Dude, he's looking great! I love the coloration of the snout (looks realistic). I'm a big fan of the blue and gold combination, not just because they were my old high school colors. :p
Towards the end, I suggest you give his hair a bit of shine to it, the horn too. It will make him a little more realistic.
