we do have to be on the lookout, had a scare (with an adult hen) just a few weeks ago, but rather then a fox, it was a hawk! (we let the chickens free roam in the day light, brooding and sleeping chickens will stay in the coop).
I was raised in this life style, on a farm, so im very used to it. The attachment is real, but as my parents taught me, cruelty is what makes the meat indrustry such a disaster. My parents have always sneered at the overconsumption of animal products more then the death itself (granted, there are cruel ways of slaughter!) so thats a view i adopted very young. When I was very young, my father got very mad at a school friend of mine, who used the many eggs we had as projectiles. Because it doesnt value how much work the chicken put into creating that egg. Ah, sorry im rambling.
I think all in all, the attachment is real, and you have to learn how to deal with it. either by being emotionally distant (seeing animals as lesser) or finding comfort in making the animals life the best possible one under the conditions.
Thank you so much for the thoughtfull comment!

Birds of prey, hadn't even thought of that one to watch for! I doubt a scarecrow would work for them. I had a family member whose chicks were tragically swallowed by a snake so chickens definitely need to be well secured and watched over.
If it's one thing in food culture I admire and personally try to live by it is respect for food. Even down to a kernel of rice that accidentally fell in the sink during the wash I pick it up. It's production and the people who put their work into producing is valuable. Since we live in a modern society where food is available 24/7 now within reach of a few taps of a phone we care less. So yes, your parents are honorable for thinking that way.
And it helps not to name the chickens lol or be too hands on but it's so hard when baby chicks are so cute! Have fun, and I hope a little farm work and animal care can help play a part in your healing.
