Anika (AH-nee-kah) is a female snake, specifically the classification of Equestrian Magic Serpent. These are large snakes that live in certain obscure places of Equestria, one such place being the Everfree Forest.

Anika is a social and playful snake, who loves to be physically affectionate, often wanting to wrap her coils in a big twisty hug around ponies that wander through her part of the forest.
Her tail is big, long, heavy and squishy, but strong enough that she can move it quickly around.

She lives in the outskirts of the everfree forest, usually staying within a pretty meadow around a spring in a clearing of the forest that is seldom trodden, and will explore around the surrounding areas hoping to find any ponies going on a walk, since this area isn't deep enough into the forest to become spooky, and there are some nice trails that make for good shortcuts between Ponyville and some of the bigger roads.

Anika is a snake, which means that she is a carnivore, and one who eats by swallowing her prey whole. It just so happens that ponies are usually the preferred meal of this species, however Anika prefers to play with and tease ponies - or just to capture them for loving cuddles - rather than eat them.
Her favourite thing to do is to use the innate magic that this species has, which is the ability to scramble the mind of a pony who looks into the magical patterns she can conjure in her eyes, appearing as vivid rings that spread outwards from the centre.
This magic makes any pony become fascinated with her gaze and unable to look away. The victim will quickly begin to feel relaxed, comfortable, with their mind quickly going fuzzy and floaty, and they become suggestible to whatever Anika says to them, making it really hard not to be hissed into a peaceful and content slumber.

Though she will still force her playful 'games' onto a passing pony, she has been known to be able to recognise when a potential playmate is really genuinely in a hurry and doesn't have the time to play. She may even help out if the pony is stressed about something. And she's been known to befriend regular visitors to her territory.

One such friend she made is Fluttershy, who would often come through the area to visit animal friends or return ones home after helping them. One day, Fluttershy unexpectedly found herself grabbed by the tail of this huge snake, and though she was afraid at first, soon found that Anika was just very cuddly and didn't mean her any harm.

In my AU, Anika then also befriends Fluttershy's partners; Spirit Wind and Derpy Hooves, and often visits their house to hang out.
