The first time Shadow ran into M4R14 he hesitated. Despite the state she was in, how she looked, she was still his Maria. Every scar on her body, how she's being used to kill him, to surpass him... it fuels him with rage, but he can't direct it at anyone. He doesn't know who did this to her.
Even if she was his enemy now, he couldn't fight her. His hesitation nearly cost him his life. He got lucky that she missed his heart, but she did claw his eye out.
Shadow sworn to put her to rest, but refuses direct contact with her ever since.
