A man comes back to earth after ten years to look for his son that he abandoned.
Lyrics:
Far away from home, out among the stars
I Fled the planet years ago, because of all the wars
Drifting for a decade, I’m sure the wars are done
Out of food and on my way to Earth to find my son
I set down the vessel, stolen years ago
Returning to my hometown, with nothing to show
Destroyed houses, ruined streets, as far as I could see
Signs of life weren’t anywhere, I sighed and turned to leave
--
As I walked back to my ship, the trusty Rusty Fox
I spied a doglike critter hiding there inside a box
It hid from me and shook with fear as I approached
I bent down and put my hand out then gave it a stroke
The thing inside tilted its head then walked out of its home
It was half organic but its legs were shiny chrome
It barked at me a high pitched whine and then it ran away
I followed the creature as it ran to a docking bay
Of an old-world trucking yard and then it sat and yipped
A hatch in the ground opened up it was easy to miss
A man inside appeared from the hole, he wasn’t more than twenty
With a startled look he shot and I dodged it like a bunny
The dog-thing growled at the laser round and the man in the hole stopped
He looked to me and studied my face and then the gun he dropped
Out of the hole he climbed and then he walked over to me
He reached into his pocket and took out something to see
--
It was a photograph that was heavily worn
Crumpled, folded, and burnt, taped where it was torn
In it stood three people, a man with wife and son
I looked to him and he smiled back, I knew he was the one
--

“For ten years I left you stranded, now I have returned
I brought my ship, The Rusty Fox, and knowledge I have learned
Let us leave this wretched place and head to Spaceport 12
I’ll use all that I have left for food to stock the shelves”
He hugged me once then turned and yelled down into the bunker
Out came his wife and their daughter, holding on to her
Aboard The Fox the four of us went, Sparky came along
The mutant dog with metal legs and a tail that looked like tongs
We flew on to Spaceport 12 and docked in the landing bay
I spent all my money and bought food to last till May
My son and I got drunk at the bar on the third night there
I cried as I apologized for missing all those years
An alien sat next to us said that he’d heard enough
Of our stories and told us that we should go take off
He said “if you think you’re so smart then write a novel, kid”
So we left and while in space that’s exactly what we did
--
I wrote about the loneliness while up in space alone
My son wrote about his life on earth after all the bombs were blown
Intergalactic success followed much to our surprise
We both became bestsellers and won the Nobel prize
--
If you find yourself in a position such as mine
Where you left the ones you love for an extended time
Realize it’s not too late to reenter their lives
No matter the distance, it’s not too far to fly
Family is forever no matter what you’ve done
Even if for ten long years you abandoned your son
Now we are together and we live inside a dome
With his family and our dog with legs of shiny chrome
