Anders and his crew, particularly his inner circle, did not have an easy upbringing. Pelagios, Jarün (and technically Calthun, by extension) had been with him from the beginning, when their village was burned by a vermin horde, leaving a preteen Anders and his friends, and numerous other young beasts orphaned. While they certainly didn’t fight off the whole horde, it was left to Anders and his companions to fight off the stragglers searching the burned ruins of their homes for potential slaves or missed plunder. This is where Anders took his first life, and started to understand, and become a part of, the cruelty of the world.
