The glass I was using was the Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM

EX? DC? HSM? I don't even understand what that mean.
30mm? It's a wideangle lens then? Or is it 35mm equiv.?
About the only thing I recognize is F1.4.

The 30mm is for the cropped APS-C DSLRs. The equivalent in 35mm is about 48, so it's pretty equal to a 50mm lens.
EX is Sigma's professional range, DC is for digital APS-C cameras and HSM is the Hyper Sonic Motor, which means the auto-focus is silent.
