In the early 90s, Amtrak decided to trial high-speed service on the northeast corridor to determine viability. They leased an X-2000 from Sweden and an ICE 1 from the Deutschebahn in Germany to run these trials, and possibly also purchase new units of the model that performed the best. While neither design was chosen and Amtrak instead went for an all new design built to handle the rougher track in the states, the trials were successful and led to the opening of the Acela Express.
It wasn't the first time Amtrak did this either. The EMD AEM-7 "Toasters" were based on the Swedish Rc4, which was trialed alongside the SNCF Class CC 21000.
