It's only since I've been on Fur Affinity that I've become familiar with this type of species or rather this kind of sub category of furries: Merfur. I don't know what exactly fascinates me about this topic, because to be honest, I was never really into fish-bodied merfolk or the folklore behind it. Anyway, just like taurs, merfur characters (especially mine) have a spot in my heart now. And I think you did Internet history with publishing the first Charr merfur character – and I love it!
As you remember, Elke, I had so many ideas for this one. Not only how the treasure hunt/guarding that treasure will look, but also where it actually takes place. So many good locations to choose. In the end, I was hoping that you take the spooky pirate cavern/hideout. All the little details/hints to make this environment feel like a gloomy, nerve-wracking pirate's lair are fantastic displayed. I'm also very happy about the addition of the rapier, which you added at the very end. So good! What I like the most about the environment are the candles and how they illuminate the fin. The longer I'm on Fur Affinity, the more I appreciate it when artists put environment elements in the front and make them a bit blurry in the process. Especially here it works even better, because the candles have such a big impact on the star of the illustration.
For me personally the look of the tail fin is very significant. After all: That's what merfolk creatures are all about. It's the driving force (or in that case: paddling force) that makes these creatures so special. And again: The idea to highlight the fin even more by illuminating it is ingeniously clever. In addition, there are the water droplets on the fin and the rest of the body which form a connection to land and sea. I mentioned it in a previous comment: I'm a sucker when it comes to merfur characters on the land, but still somehow attached to the element of water. The proximity is palpable here with the fin (again: the most important physical characteristic for merfolk characters) floating only inches over the water. I'm also happy we didn't forget to add some water droplets on the remaining body. To be honest: At this state of the illustration I was hesitant to ask you. After all: You were basically done with it. But I'm so grateful that you made this tiny but important addition. At this point, I would like to mention that I am delighted with how well you have managed the transition between upper and lower body. I mentioned it in our DM's that it's important for me that the character doesn't look like as if she's wearing some sort of swimsuit. Instead, the fin should look like a real, seamless part of the body. Which is exactly what you have masterfully achieved.
Another thing I like to highlight is how stunning the lighting in general looks. I mentioned the candles already and I adore how these cast their warm light on the character, highlighting the underside of the tail in the process. But that's only half the magic. I was baffled how eye-catching the interplay of light and shadow works on the upper part of my character Chick. The blue color of her hair feels more powerful and vibrant than anything I've ever seen from any other artist. The same is true for her clothing which, btw., looks incredible true to detail. I'm still a bit curious though how she would have looked with a more "usual" look when it comes to clothing. But I'm not disappointed in the slightest by her outfit at all. Makes her even more recognizable.
In summary: I love each and every aspect of your craft. Thanks again! And I hope the other projects I have planned for you will be as wonderful as this here.
