a few coloring tips... make first a light layer of color... then darken it in once you're satisfied with where you placed the shadows
as for shadows... on warm colors (red, yellow and orange) use brown and on cool colors (everything else practically) use a DARK purple... but make sure it blends in smoothly. when you're doing something like fur, you need to have some other color as the 'shadowing' color and highlight color since when you look at fur, there'll be little shadows and highlights on almost every strand
