Helena (Tenebra) Machsaber was born the second child in a bad relationship that didn't want any to begin with. Her home life was terrible and abusive with neither of her parents wanting anything to do with her. She became very withdrawn, shutting out the pain by not letting herself feel anything at all. When she was only five years old she ran away from home to live on the streets. Her parents never bothered to look for her.

Helena survived on the streets however she could. When she was seven she took part in her first arena fight. While there are many junior leagues out there for children to fight their own poke-battles in, there are an uncomfortable number of parents who feel that the safe and controlled environment of these leagues only serves to make their kids soft. These parents pit their kids against one another in illegal battles in order to "toughen them up".

Helena spent several years fighting in these battles, growing more and more distant and uncaring about the dismal world she was a part of. She evolved from her poochyena form into her current mightyena form at a very early age and took on the name Tenebra when she did, eager to leave as much of her old life behind as possible.

Soon afterwards Tenebra began fighting in more serious battles against adult opponents. Her early evolution and hardened attitude allowed her to pass for such and the promoters of these matches didn't really care to look into the matter. The terrible conditions of her life would lead her to shut her emotions off completely. Doing this, along with her dark and unsavory surroundings, would allow the corruptive taint of shadow to take hold of her. By the time she was fourteen she was a full-fledged shadow pokemon - a soulless fighting machine without a shred of pity, remorse, or fear.

She existed in this state for two years until promoter Felix Blackclaw watched her fight and offered her the chance to compete in his official poke-combat league. After getting to know her he found out how old she really was and was horrified. He saw in her a dark reflection of his own life and felt that he had to take action, taking her in and in time adopting her.

Showing her love and compassion for what was really the first time in her life put a crack in the shadowed walls around her heart and allowed her the hope of recovery from all that had happened to her. Felix played hardball with Principal Felinduce in order to get her enrolled in the Poke-Academy of Higher Learning, as Felinduce didn't take well to the idea of a shadow pokemon in his halls. But Felix convinced him that the only way to help her recover would be to let her interact with normal people in a normal atmosphere. Felinduce agreed but keeps a sharp eye on her, particularly after some very rough incidents during her early combats. Within the school only a handful know of her true nature.

Tenebra has been building on the love of her adoptive father in order to recover from the horrors that life has heaped upon her but it hasn't been easy. Her own sister Nicole treats her very badly, hoping to drive her over the edge and be rid of her. Not used to dealing with people, Tenebra usually just turns her intimidate power up to maximum and snarls at people rather than try. Most others see her as a cold-hearted, brutal enforcer and instrument of Nicole's wrath. But really all she wants is the chance to really be "alive" again.

Tenebra is a true monster in a battle. She has nearly a decade of experience fighting in the harsh world of underground pit fights and has seen and experienced it all. Extremely strong and tough to begin with, her shadow taint has only made her even more so. She handles most of her fights very physically, using her dark and shadow powers subtly or to enhance her fighting ability. Those who assume that she's just a dumb, slow brute find out the hard way that she's very smart and cunning, and extremely quick for someone her size. In just over a year at the academy she has lost some matches due to disqualification after the use of excessive force, but she has never been beaten.
