Amba
Through whisp'ring pine on pale blue snow,
A setting sun did cast aglow,
A weary soul in landscape vast,
A relic from an ancient past.
Crossed bold upon the snowfield's tome,
Marked footfall not upon a home,
Each ghostly breath in winter's chill,
A last of lasts in time held still.
Visage evoked as sacred flame,
Eyes as embers that shall not wane,
To guard in which its soul ingrained,
A land to live for all sustained.
A wary pact with man withheld,
Rife blood-soaked maw and bolt propelled;
Grand elder-kin, the nary named,
Sired wind and rain as force untamed.
Alas, man's heart began to turn,
Now bright, greed's fickle flame doth burn;
Stoked light a warmth it doth provide,
Now wrathful ruin to all betide.
One by one beating hearts were stilled,
By lance, then arms to speed the killed;
Across the land rose up the knell,
Symphonic gain scored silent hell.
Coveted craft of death's design,
Or fiendish foe of hearts malign,
Scant refuge found amidst the blight,
Nor many addled by its plight.
Progress prime within all consigned,
Condemned the future left behind,
Like harbinger in frigid wild,
As one of legion left beguiled.
The sun's internment 'neath the west,
And shadows dark on soul transgressed,
Foretold the journey through the snows,
To mark its end with death's repose.
The lonely trav'ller, scarred and old,
Had stature still as proud and bold;
A sight sublime not seen again,
Once found its final earthen den.
Within the glowing flame withdrew,
Outside a wind gone colder blew;
More like the dark and barren skies,
This world where all that's sacred lies.

I wanted to write a poem to go with this photo of an Amur tigress (Panthera tigris altaica) bathed in the light of a setting winter sun. I'm not a great writer, but it was something I wanted to do nonetheless.
